First Look: BYD E-Vali Prototype Signals a New Era for Electric Large Vans

Vanaways gets an early look at BYD's upcoming all-electric E-Vali ahead of its anticipated UK launch.

The electric van market is moving at pace, and one of the most talked-about new arrivals could soon be heading to UK roads. During the recent Company Car in Action event, the Vanaways team had the opportunity to get a first look at a prototype version of the all-new BYD E-Vali, giving us an early insight into what could become a major contender in the large electric van sector.

Although BYD has yet to confirm full UK launch details, industry expectations point towards the E-Vali arriving later this year as the Chinese manufacturer continues its rapid expansion into the European commercial vehicle market.

A Purpose-Built Electric Van

Unlike many electric vans that have evolved from diesel platforms, the E-Vali has been designed from the ground up as a dedicated electric commercial vehicle. First unveiled at the IAA Transportation Show in Hannover during 2024, the model has been developed specifically for European operators, focusing on payload, cargo volume and driver comfort.

The prototype displayed featured specifications that align closely with information previously released by BYD, including:

  • Up to 17.5m³ of load space
  • Payload capacity of up to 1,450kg
  • 80.64kWh BYD Blade Battery
  • 150kW electric motor
  • 188kW DC rapid charging capability
  • Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality
  • Low cargo floor and full standing height throughout the load area

These figures place the E-Vali directly into competition with established large electric vans such as the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter, Renault Master E-Tech and Volkswagen's forthcoming electric large van offerings.

A Surprisingly Premium Cabin

One of the biggest surprises from our first look was just how well-equipped the cabin appears to be.

The specification board alongside the prototype listed features rarely seen as standard in commercial vehicles, including heated and ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel, wireless phone charging, digital camera mirrors, a panoramic camera system and even an integrated warm/cold refrigerator.

A large 12.8-inch touchscreen sits alongside a 10.25-inch digital instrument display, while Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and BYD's connected app functionality are also included.

For drivers spending long days behind the wheel, the E-Vali looks set to offer a level of comfort more commonly associated with premium passenger vehicles than traditional panel vans.

Designed for Modern Fleets

BYD's focus on fleet operators is evident throughout the vehicle's design.

The low entry height, wide-opening rear doors and generous internal cargo dimensions should appeal to parcel delivery operators, service engineers and urban logistics businesses. The company's Blade Battery technology, already proven across its passenger car range, also promises enhanced durability and safety compared with conventional battery designs.

Rapid charging capability is another headline feature. BYD claims the battery can charge from 10% to 80% in around 30 minutes under optimal conditions, helping minimise downtime for businesses operating intensive daily routes.

What Happens Next?

While the E-Vali has already been showcased across Europe, its UK introduction appears to be drawing closer. BYD has increasingly used fleet industry events to introduce new products, and recent appearances at Company Car in Action have highlighted the brand's growing ambitions within both the passenger car and commercial vehicle sectors.

For now, the vehicle we viewed remains a prototype, meaning final UK specifications, pricing and availability are still to be confirmed. However, if the production model stays true to what we've seen so far, the E-Vali could become one of the most significant new electric van launches of 2025.

"First time using Vansaway! I was in a bit of a panic as my van broke down and I was unable to fix it. My van is my livihood, so I looked into leasing and contract. I wish I done it sooner. I spoke to Jonathan as my first point of contact. I couldn't have got any luckier having him as my support. He was absolutely fantastic, he went above and beyond to help me. He was easy to contact and would always reply when I had any concerns or questions. His knowledge on all vehicles was impeccable, which made things easier. He listened to what I wanted and needed and explained everything thoroughly help me making the right choice in plan and kept in touch throughout the entire process! He knew I was in desperate need of a van and he did not disappoint and kept his word and I was able to get my new van delivered as soon as possible. Enjoying the drive. Its great about the perks involved in having a contract hire as well! Thank you so much for everything! Highly recommend, vans are just not how they use to be, so its great to have a brand new van along with the support of any engine faults things like that. A huge stress off my shoulders being sole trader."

"VWS Limited recently leased three vans through Vanaways, and we could not fault the service we received. Rod in Sales and Ash in Delivery were both extremely professional, knowledgeable, and helpful throughout the entire process. They made every aspect of arranging the leases straightforward and kept us informed every step of the way.
