Volkswagen Caddy Maxi Van Review

2022 saw Volkswagen unveiling their fifth-generation Caddy which, for the first time,  merges the popular model with the same MQB platform that underpins a majority of the VW Group’s passenger car range. This shift only serves to highlight the car-derivative nature of this small van. With a driving experience similar to that of the ever-popular VW Golf, the Caddy offers a smooth and comfortable ride, and performs well in a city setting.

The Maxi acts as the Caddy’s long wheelbase variation, with an extended load length of 2,249mm –  a significant jump compared to the base Caddy’s load length of 1,779mm. If you’re a tradesperson who likes the versatility of car-derivative small vans but perhaps requires a bit more cargo room than what vans of this ilk typically offer, the Caddy Maxi is definitely a viable option. For all of its good qualities, however, the Caddy Maxi is significantly let down by its payload, which lags behind those of its biggest competitors.

Engines and Spec

It’s rare that Volkswagen fails to impress with their engines, and the Caddy Maxi is no exception. The van’s 2.0-litre diesel engine is available with either 75hp, 102hp or 122hp. Although the 122hp has that sporty edge to it, the less powerful models still manage to hold their own, and you’ll find that it’s a handy option for nipping between jobs. In terms of mileage, the diesel-powered 2.0-litre TDIs manage to reach 57.6 mph.

Interior

The benefits of the Caddy Maxi’s use of a popular passenger car’s chassis don’t stop with its exterior, as the cabin is leagues above some of its rivals. Any preconceived notions you may have about vans being uncomfortable will be swept away, as the Caddy Maxi offers all of the comfort of sitting in a car. With buckle-style seats and a conveniently situated gear lever, you’ll never feel cramped on long journeys.

The inclusion of a brand new touchscreen infotainment system is also a neat feature. It’s sleek, accessible and handles everything from the radio to air conditioning and lane-keeping assist. The convenience of this system removes much of the hassle that comes with a lot of the analogue options found in many other van models.

Interior storage is also great with an array of locations to stash important items, including a large dashboard top holder that is great for holding A4 paperwork, wide door caddies, a covered glovebox and a large overhead shelf. Additional underseat storage can also be included as an option.

Loadspace & Practicality

For all of its good points, however, the Caddy Maxi is significantly let down by its loading capacity. Coming in with a payload of up to just 700kg, the Caddy Maxi falls short of its long wheelbase rivals. Take the Ford Transit Connect, for instance, whose High Payload model racks up a 865kg payload rating. This is slightly disappointing for a van which offers a longer load length, but if you’re in the market for a small van anyhow, a high payload might not even be a priority for. Plus, when considering all of the other benefits of the Caddy Maxi, you might find that the pros tend to outweigh the cons.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Upgraded cabin and loading areas.
  • Drives like a Golf.
  • Solid loading length for the Maxi.

Cons

  • Payload fails to keep up with its competitors.
  • No electric option available.
  • Disruptive road and engine noise inside the cab.

The Verdict

The versatility of the VW Caddy Maxi, along with its comfortable interior and car-like sensibilities allow it to be a staple of the small van market in 2022. If you’re a tradesperson who frequently has to make long journeys and needs something that is multi-purposeful, the Caddy Maxi could be the van for you.
