Citroen E-Relay Luton vs Fiat E-Ducato Luton

Low running costs, smooth driving, sustainable transport and reliability are among the many benefits of all-electric vehicles. Over the past decade, UK roads have experienced a surge in battery-powered cars and vans, and for good reason.

As technology advances, it is only right that we should begin looking for more environmentally friendly means of transport. Be it for personal or professional use, an electric van is a brilliant way to cut down running costs, lower your carbon footprint and experience unparalleled comfort on the roads.

Those seeking practicality, decent payloads, storage space and comfort may wonder if they are setting their sights too high. You are not! Electric vans are more capable than ever before and many give their diesel counterparts a real run for their money.

Below, we’ve put the Citroen E-Relay Luton and the Fiat E-Ducato Luton head to head, comparing their battery size, payload, storage and interior.

Read on to find out how these two all-electric Lutons compare!

Engines and Spec

We thought we’d kick things off under the bonnet of the Citroen E-Relay Luton. The driving force behind this van is an impressive 75kWh battery, offering 154 miles on a single charge. That’s enough to drive from London to Bristol and still have a little juice left over! Using a 50 kW public charging point, this battery can regain up to 85% charge in under an hour too.

In terms of cargo space, the Luton body boasts internal width, length and height of 2057mm x 3480mm x 2235mm for the L3 model, and 2057mm x 4150mm x 2390mm for the L4 model. Of course, that famous over-cab Luton storage is ideal for extra-long loads and additional storage. This all-electric van also offers an impressive 1147kg payload in the L3 model, with the L4 coming in just behind at 979kg.

So, how does the Fiat E-Ducato Luton compare to this impressively practical vehicle?

The E-Ducato Luton is powered by a 90kWh electric motor, with a choice between either a 47kWh or 79kWh battery pack. This equals 122bhp, perfect for zipping around town and making shorter back-and-forth journeys. However, with a top speed of 60mph, the E-Ducato is limited on motorways. Despite this, the E-Ducato redeems itself with a whopping 280 Nm of instant torque, making it a perfect choice for urban environments and city driving. For heavier payloads, the E-Ducato’s ‘power’ mode is a welcome addition, offering a little extra muscle when required.

Interior

When it comes to the interior of these all-electric vehicles, both offer a range of tech features as well as practical storage and comfortable seating.

The Citroen E-Relay Luton boasts a spacious cabin with two passenger seats and plenty of legroom and a number of storage cubbies. What’s more, those hoping for a little extra comfort or safety will be pleased to discover that the E-Relay Luton is available with up to 11 driver aids, including an adaptive traction control system. Within the Luton body, the E-Relay also features locking strips and tie rails to secure cargo during transit.

The question is, can the Fiat E-Ducato Luton match the E-Relay’s interior quality? The short answer is yes. Those who have seen the interior of the diesel Ducato will be aware of its well-considered design and will be pleased to hear that this has remained in the all-electric model. This cab is perfect for long drives and a range of terrains, so potholes and bumpy roads are no issue.

Regarding tech and entertainment, all variations of the E-Ducato are kitted out with touchscreen infotainment systems, with the eTecnico variant also boasting a rear-view camera, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and sat-nav.

Finally, the E-Ducato Luton features an updated instrument panel, effectively displaying crucial information such as battery charge and range.

The Verdict

There’s no denying that both the Citroen E-Relay Luton and the Fiat E-Ducato Luton are impressive vehicles, capable of carrying large loads without sacrificing comfort or efficiency. For tradespeople, removal specialists and delivery drivers, both vehicles present a world of possibilities.

Choosing between the two is no small task and is wholly dependent on your individual requirements. Those planning longer journeys and motorway cruising may prefer the Citroen E-Relay Luton, owing to its higher top speed and decent range. However, if you’re after some serious instant torque and a choice of driving modes for urban driving, the Fiat E-Ducato may just tick your boxes.

"Paige was outstanding in her responsiveness to what presented as a serious problem for our company. The finance company used by her company caused unnecessary and significant delays in the delivery of our van - the pain of which was mitigated somewhat by Paige's proactive communication, informative and realistic communication and very professional demeanour. I'd recommend her and she meant our view of Vanaways was overall positive."
