Electric Van Review: The Peugeot e-Boxer

The Peugeot e-Boxer Van at a glance

The latest of their models to join the party as an electric vehicle, the Peugeot e-Boxer offers a more environmentally conscious mode of transport for van drivers across the country. With the battery being installed under the floor, there is no compromise on the cargo space available, with 3 body shapes available ranging from 11.5m3 to 15m3 loading space.

Use your van to make long journeys? No worries, because the e-Boxer offers 154 miles of drive per charge thanks to its 75 kWh battery, which has the potential to charge up to 80% in an hour at a 50kW DC rapid charging point. If you don’t require your van to drive such long distances, then there is also an option to get a smaller battery of 35 kWh.

Like other Boxer models, the Peugeot e-Boxer comes available as panel vans, window vans and chassis cabs – meaning there is one for you no matter your needs.

Engines and Spec

The Peugeot e-Boxer operates using a fully electric engine, with the option to have either a 37 kWh (only available with the L2 panel body) or 75 kWh battery; each of these respectively allowing you to cover 73 or 154 miles when driving on full charge – an impressive distance when compared to some competitor electric vans.

Though this is based on the Worldwide harmonised Light vehicles Test Procedures (WLTP) approval protocol, these figures may face some discrepancies when you take into account additional factors, such as payload and driving conditions (i.e. cold weather or stop/start traffic).

To charge the e-Boxer from 0 to 100% with a standard, compatible 7.4kW Wallbox charger, you will need to allow 12 hours. Of course, if you don’t let your vehicle run down completely then you will reach full charge even faster, with most people being able to charge their van overnight after a day of driving and facing no issues the next day.

In terms of loading space, the e-Boxer offers three different lengths (L2, L3 and L4) to suit your loading needs, though it is worth bearing in mind that only one height of 2,522mm is available across all e-Boxers. The load length and payload for each of these measures as 3,210mm and 1,070kg for L2, 3,705mm and 740kg for L3 and 4,070mm and 1,150kg for L4 – although it should be noted that L4 has a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 4,400kg as opposed to the 3,500 GVW of the L2 and L3 bodies.

Interior

In our humble opinion, the Peugeot e-Boxer places averagely on the comfort scale in comparison to other vans, however the cabin area does feature some intuitive features to make your drive a smoother experience.

Just like many cars now have a stop/start button for the engines, the e-Boxer has been inspired to include buttons as a means to control your driving transmission. Instead of a gear stick to put the van into drive, neutral and reverse, three buttons have been used for even easier gearbox control – labelled ‘D’ ‘N’ and ‘R’ respectively.

In addition to this, the interior rearview mirror features a helpful screen display that clearly shows helpful information to the driver, such as the remaining battery percentage, the range in miles this equates to and the driving mode the van is in.

The cabin also features numerous storage spaces and a 5” touchscreen infotainment display with an integrated navigation system, for additional convenience.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Smooth and quiet to drive with zero emissions.

  • Cheaper to run than the diesel version of the same model.

  • Can drive up to 154 miles on a full charge.

Cons

  • Lower payload compared to diesel version, though same amount of loading space.

  • Though it includes some intuitive features, the cabin is not as stylish or comfortable as that of some competitors’ vans.

  • Expensive to buy outright.

The Verdict

With the potential for fast charging, a good driving range and a number of body options available, the Peugeot e-Boxer van is a great choice for those who are looking for an electric alternative to their current van without undergoing numerous changes in terms of space and convenience.

Though the payload is lower than Peugeot’s combustion Boxer vans, there is still just as much loading space available, meaning there is no need to up-size from your current van when purchasing the e-Boxer.

Being fully electric, you can enjoy a smooth and quiet drive, made even better with the assistance of blindspot monitoring and rear traffic alert to increase driver safety when visibility is reduced. Offering an archetypal external design (available in a range of colours) and everything you would expect to see on the inside, the e-Boxer is an evolved and intuitive variation of a classic van.

"Found these guys online and was a little bit wary to buy a new van from someone I hadn't heard of. From the off, the first phone call was professional and gave me all the information that I needed, Theo was great, helpful and I proceeded to order my new van, Paige sorted the paperwork quickly and efficiently and within 10 days I had my new van delivered! The price was very competitive and all parts of the transaction were easy and hassle free, wouldn't hesitate to recommend these guys, Thank you so much for a really good experience."

"Paige was outstanding in her responsiveness to what presented as a serious problem for our company. The finance company used by her company caused unnecessary and significant delays in the delivery of our van - the pain of which was mitigated somewhat by Paige's proactive communication, informative and realistic communication and very professional demeanour. I'd recommend her and she meant our view of Vanaways was overall positive."
