Fiat Ducato Dropside vs Fiat E-Ducato Electric Dropside

Since the company was formed, almost 125 years ago, Fiat has built a reputation for Italian

excellence, with millions of vehicles on roads across the world. Aside from their range of beloved cars, such as the Fiat 500, the automobile manufacturer is well-known for their commercial output and boast a range of high-quality vans for tradespeople, businesses and conversion enthusiasts alike.

Among these vans is the Ducato and, more specifically, its dropside variant. This powerful van is a sure choice for gardeners, landscapers and tradespeople of all kinds, offering an impressive payload, updated cab features and a comfortable driving experience. With all of this to offer,  the Ducato dropside is a sure choice. Right? Well, not quite.

Those on a quest for payload, practicality, sustainability and low running costs may find themselves eying up the Ducato’s all-electric sibling. Unlike certain competitors, the E-Ducato is not a conversion. This great van is 100% Fiat, and it really shows!

Below, we’ve put these two brilliant vans head to head to see how they compare in terms of engine, specifications, running costs and interior.

Engines and Spec

Let’s dive right in and take a look below the bonnets of these two vans, starting with the regular Diesel model. The first thing worth noting is that the newest Ducato has replaced the old 2.3-litre engine with an equally powerful, yet more efficient, 2.2-litre version. This is capable of pushing up to 160bhp, depending on the model. What’s more, all but the entry-level edition of the Ducato feature a new 9-speed gearbox, guaranteeing a smooth driving experience and increased handling.

For all large vans and commercial vehicles, fuel consumption is something of a worry. That said, the Fiat Ducato Dropside performs incredibly well alongside competitors; the 140 bhp model claims to return 34 mpg. In comparison, the Volkswagen crafter can manage 38.2 mpg and the Mercedes Sprinter claims 36.2 mpg.

With a grasp on the diesel model, let’s find out how the Ducato’s all-electric counterpart

performs. In terms of power, the E-Ducato features a 121bhp motor capable of providing some serious instant torque. This, combined with the van’s lower centre of gravity gives the E-Ducato unbeatable handling; we’d even go as far as saying it is a more pleasant driving experience than the diesel version. As is the case with most electric vehicles, the E-Ducato is incredibly quiet and well-insulated from road and tyre noise.

Interior

So, how do the two compare inside the cab? We’ll start, once again, with the diesel Ducato,  which received some criticism in the past owing to its older cab design. However, prospective buyers will be pleased to discover that the 2022 Ducato was released with a much-needed facelift. Aside from the base version, every Ducato model is now kitted out with a 7.0-inch display and infotainment system, boasting Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth Connectivity and Satellite Navigation. Not bad!

Looking at the interior of the E-Ducato, it shares many features with its diesel sibling, with a few adjustments to accommodate the alternate power and electric functionality. As with the regular Ducato, the Fiat E-Ducato Dropside offers plenty of storage, a comfortable driving position and good visibility. The plastics used in the interior of the E-Ducato don’t feel forced or cheap either.

The E-Ducato is also available in two trim levels, standard and eTechnico. Standard features include climate control, a rearview camera with parking sensors and a 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity; that’s more features than you get on the base-level diesel Ducato Dropside.

The Verdict

There are no two ways about it, both the diesel Ducato and E-Ducato Dropside are incredibly versatile and practical vans. From their impressive payloads, durable builds and functional dropside chassis to the comfortable cabs, these two vans really do put up a good fight. In the end, it all comes down to personal requirements and intended use.

Those looking for the highest payload of the pair would find the diesel Ducato is better suited to their needs. However, those on the hunt for low running costs, in-cab comfort and unbeatable handling may find the E-Ducato is a better fit.

"First time using Vansaway! I was in a bit of a panic as my van broke down and I was unable to fix it. My van is my livihood, so I looked into leasing and contract. I wish I done it sooner. I spoke to Jonathan as my first point of contact. I couldn't have got any luckier having him as my support. He was absolutely fantastic, he went above and beyond to help me. He was easy to contact and would always reply when I had any concerns or questions. His knowledge on all vehicles was impeccable, which made things easier. He listened to what I wanted and needed and explained everything thoroughly help me making the right choice in plan and kept in touch throughout the entire process! He knew I was in desperate need of a van and he did not disappoint and kept his word and I was able to get my new van delivered as soon as possible. Enjoying the drive. Its great about the perks involved in having a contract hire as well! Thank you so much for everything! Highly recommend, vans are just not how they use to be, so its great to have a brand new van along with the support of any engine faults things like that. A huge stress off my shoulders being sole trader."
