Fiat E-Ducato Luton vs Ford E-Transit Luton

There is currently a goal being worked towards that will make the sales of new cars and vans all zero-emission vehicles globally by 2040. This is why the number of electric vans on the roads is increasing year after year, as governments, businesses and other organisations work towards these goals. And that is why nowadays if you can name a model of a diesel vehicle, you can probably find an electric equivalent either currently on the market or releasing soon.

Fiat has been producing its Ducato van since 1981. It is a light commercial vehicle that is immensely popular, being the most common motorhome base used in Europe, and available in various body types for businesses of any goal to make use of. The third generation of the Ducato was fully released in 2008 and underwent a facelift in 2014 to revise the design and engines, and then in 2019, the electric E-Ducato was announced.

The Transit has been a staple light commercial vehicle of Ford’s since 1965, originally as just a cargo van but then expanded into a range of body types. It has been the best-selling light commercial vehicle in Europe for forty years. The most recent generation of Transit was introduced in 2014 with multiple improvements and then in 2020, Ford announced the release of their brand new battery electric cargo van, the E-Transit.

For the sake of this review, we’ll be looking at the features of the Luton body type of both these vehicles. A Luton van has a box-shaped body that extends over the driver cab, capable of holding a lot of cargo, making it suitable for businesses looking to carry a heavy payload.

Here are some of the differences between these two vans.

Engines and Spec

One of the key standout features of the E-Ducato is its amazing range. There are two different battery sizes available, a 47 or 79-kW-hr choice, which can give an impressive range of over 300 miles with the bigger battery option. This range is greatly helped by the different driving modes that you can use in the van. Normal is best for everyday use, while Power is suitable if you’re carrying plenty of cargo and need that extra push. Finally, Eco will limit how much power you use, helping to increase the range over longer trips.

The Ford e-Transit Luton has a fully electric engine powered by a 68kWH battery. This battery on a full charge has a maximum driving range of just under 200 miles and also has the added benefit of producing zero emissions while driving. As mentioned in our full review, this number has been tested to take into account weather conditions, payload and age, with this being the number when driving in the best environment.

Interior

The interior of the Ford E-Transit Luton is clean, stylish and well-thought-out. It has a large and easy-to-use 12” infotainment system and an instrument cluster that clearly displays the power use, allowing a driver to see how effectively they are using the car so they can improve the way they drive.

The best part of an electric vehicle is the simplified interior that seems modern and innovative. This includes replacing the gearbox you might come to expect in a diesel van with a simple device capable of switching between drive, reverse and neutral, as well as being able to quickly change from Normal to Eco or Power. Find out more about the Fiat E-Ducato Luton in our full review.

The instrument panel has also been modified to show you the battery level and range of your van. You can expect to carry a great amount of cargo in the e-Ducato, with a maximum payload of 1900kg. The interior is robust and practical, with plenty of storage to make your van suitable as a mobile office.

Let us compare this with the stats for the Ford e-Transit. It has a generous payload capacity of over 1000kg, an internal length and width of 3736mm by 1987mm and an internal height of 2120mm.

The Verdict

Both of these vans are reliable models that will easily be capable of being used by many industries. Luton vans are most popularly used by removal companies and you can see why, with generous payloads that will keep cargo safe and secure during transit.

"Paige was outstanding in her responsiveness to what presented as a serious problem for our company. The finance company used by her company caused unnecessary and significant delays in the delivery of our van - the pain of which was mitigated somewhat by Paige's proactive communication, informative and realistic communication and very professional demeanour. I'd recommend her and she meant our view of Vanaways was overall positive."
