Fiat E-Ducato Luton vs Volkswagen e-Transporter Luton

The Luton van can be traced back to its birthplace in Bedfordshire where it was originally designed to make room for low-density goods. This type of van features a distinctive box-shaped body that extends over the driver cab. The portion of the body that rests on top of the driver cab is otherwise known as the kick or the Luton.

Electric Luton vans still retain the original design and shape although modern vans are now designed to minimise wind resistance. The Fiat E-Ducato Luton and the Volkswagen e-Transporter Luton vans are no exceptions.

Boasting the efficiency the Luton is known for, the Volkswagen e-Transporter boasts easy drive and handling with a comfortable cab experience. Whereas  the Fiat E-Ducato Luton boasts storage, range and efficiency and is considered as the go-to vehicle for tradespeople of all kinds. For a more in-depth look, read the full review for the Fiat E-Ducato Luton and the Volkswagon e-Transporter Luton on our website.

With both vans offering ample storage space and low running costs, it can be difficult to make a decision between the two. This review will lay out the nitty gritty details of each van, side by side, so that you can make the best decision for your van needs.

Engines and Spec

The Fiat E-Ducato Luton is an ideal choice for individuals on the hunt for practicality, reliability and power. Though the E-Ducato range features multiple trims, body types and vehicle lengths, they are all powered by a 90 kWh electric motor, with a choice of either 47 kWh or 79 kWh batteries and around 122 bhp and 280 Nm of torque and a maximum speed of 60 mph. This makes the vehicle perfect for short trips in an urban environment but less ideal for long trips on motorways as it lacks the speed needed for these bigger roads.

In terms of payload, the E-Ducato has some impressive numbers and at the top end boasts an immense 1,885 kg capacity. Combine this with easy loading and unloading via the rear doors and the classic over-cab Luton storage and you have a very attractive choice for drivers who have large loads to carry. E-Ducato drivers will also benefit from a selection of 3 driving modes, each designed to manage battery life and optimise performance.

Like the Fiat E-Ducato, the Volkswagen e-Transporter Luton also has limited speeds of up to 56 mph and a driving range of 82 miles meaning that it might not be the right choice for those who are after a van for long distance travel on faster roads.

Battery choice is limited to a single 37.3 kWh battery but charging is fast and efficient. The e-Transporter charges to 80% from flat in  around 45 minutes, though it must be noted that the single battery pack gives this van a notably poor driving range up against competitors which boast a twin battery. The positioning of the battery component slightly reduces the otherwise substantial 996 kg payload, though this weight capacity is still very competitive when compared with similar vehicles.

Interior

The Fiat E-Ducato Luton interior boasts an abundance of storage options, with large bins below the centre console, large door pockets and dash-top cubbies. Those looking to go seamlessly from van to mobile office will be pleased to discover that the centre backrest folds down to double as a desk.

The E-Ducato has a well designed infotainment system, with a 7.0-inch touchscreen display, smartphone connectivity and satellite navigation included on every model aside from base spec. The E-Ducato’s instrument panel incorporates important information such as battery charge and range and also includes a small ‘Mopar Connect’ screen above the driver’s side dashboard.

Similarly for the Volkswagon e-Transporter, the interior space is certainly where this van excels. Accounting for the Luton storage space, conventional interior storage area and various spots within the cab, the spacious driver area ensures a great all-round driving experience, with additional storage at a premium.

For those seeking a quiet drive and no-nonsense experience on the roads, you may be onto a winner with this Luton. There are plenty of bonus features such as the easy access touchscreen centre console, which comes with apps and helpful vehicle-centric features. Other extras include rear parking sensors, remote central locking and electronic stability control.

The Verdict

So, which should you go for? Well the answer is clearly not straightforward. Both are impressive vehicles, boasting a range of practical features, over-cab storage and class-leading payloads.

For those with an eye on interior design, the cab of the Volkswagen e-Transporter Luton is a joy to ride in though there are limitations of the vehicle’s battery, speed and range.. Excellent in the right situations and not great in others, this particular van seems perfect for economical short-range trips and city commuting.

The low running costs of the E-Ducato Luton, combined with the impressive payload and choices of battery, body types and lengths make it an equally attractive option for those doing shorter routes and navigating urban environments.

"Paige was outstanding in her responsiveness to what presented as a serious problem for our company. The finance company used by her company caused unnecessary and significant delays in the delivery of our van - the pain of which was mitigated somewhat by Paige's proactive communication, informative and realistic communication and very professional demeanour. I'd recommend her and she meant our view of Vanaways was overall positive."
