Ford Transit Dropside vs Ford E-Transit Electric Dropside

Now, more than ever, businesses, professionals and vehicle enthusiasts are reconsidering the efficiency and sustainability of their cars and vans. As we become increasingly aware of the environmental impact our lives have, it is no wonder many individuals are weighing up their options. It’s no secret that the electric vehicle industry is growing at an incredible rate, and with battery-powered vans giving their diesel counterparts a run for their money, we don’t blame you for considering one.

Of course, this is no easy decision and both electric and diesel vehicles are accompanied by their respective merits and pitfalls. The Ford Transit Dropside and E-Transit Dropside are no exception; both are incredible vans and dominate the market. If you’re stuck between a rock and a hard place comparing the two, this van vs van comparison is sure to help.

Read on to discover our thoughts regarding the diesel and electric versions of Ford’s dropside Transit.

Engines and Spec

Let’s jump right in and take a look beneath the bonnets of these great vans, starting with the traditional diesel engine. It’s no secret that the Ford Transit range has dominated the commercial vehicle market for decades, and the Dropside variant is no exception. Boasting the new and improved 2.0-litre EcoBlue engine, this vehicle is efficient, effective and smooth to drive. With an acute focus on sustainability and emission reduction, this engine is 13% more efficient than its 2.2-litre predecessor.  Moreover, the top-end Euro 6 model offers an impressive 185hp, more than enough for heavy loads and speedy manoeuvres. Talking of loads, you might be wondering ‘how much weight can the Ford Transit Dropside take?’. The largest dropside variant offers a load capacity of 1,388kg, more than enough for bulky equipment and material transportation.

So, how does the E-Transit Dropside compare to the diesel engine? Well, for a start it’s electric, so there’s no ‘engine’. Instead, this eco-friendly variant features a 400-volt battery and OEM drivetrain which, although smooth, still packs a punch of 269hp. This motor, in tandem with the dropside body, is ideal for large loads and heavy lifting. What’s more, it offers a range of 196 miles with fast charging capabilities when required. In terms of technology, the E-Transit’s regenerative braking system improves mileage and reduces cost!

We were also particularly impressed by the E-Transit’s reworked rear suspension, which features independent coil springs. This equates to a beautifully smooth driving experience, reducing the impact of bumps and improving handling quite significantly. For tradespeople, commercial drivers and van enthusiasts alike, the E-Transit exists as a mightily impressive alternative to a diesel vehicle and, owing to the lower running costs and emissions, is definitely worth considering.

Interior

Let’s shift gears and take a look at the interior and load space of these two vehicles. It’s safe to say that both models are well-designed and impressively built, inside and out. In a world where many electric variants can feel like rushed conversions, it is refreshing to discover that the E-Transit is built to the same high standard as its diesel counterpart. There are, of course, differences between the two, which we’ll discuss below.

Inside the cab of the Ford Transit Dropside, both driver and passengers are greeted by ergonomic controls, comfortable seating, and ample storage space. Those familiar with the latest Transit Custom will notice a few similarities, such as the 8” touchscreen control panel in the centre of the cabin. This feature is certainly an upgrade on previous models, offering the latest in Ford’s infotainment software, including Bluetooth, Carplay and Android Auto as well as satellite navigation.

The E-Transit boasts an equally impressive interior and shares many characteristics with the diesel model. A newer, larger, SYNC 4 12” central touchscreen boasts all of the features mentioned above and makes smartphone connectivity efficient and easy. For those looking for a larger central display, advanced route planning and cloud connectivity, the E-Transit might just take the top spot. This model also differs in terms of the digital display and instrument cluster, with digital battery levels and a power use indicator.

The Verdict

Overall, both the diesel and electric versions of the Transit Dropside are incredible vehicles, boasting efficiency, comfort, durability and practicality. Of course, if you’re looking for a sure winner, the answer depends on your requirements.

In terms of range and power, the regular Ford Transit comes out on top, offering drivers a little more choice. However, features such as regenerative braking, fast charging and an impressive amount of in-cab technology give the E-Transit a truly futuristic feel and provide even more options for fleet managers and commercial use.

Ultimately, there is no champion. Personal preference and intended use will decide which van is for you. Fortunately, here at Vanaways, we’re here to help. To discuss either of these vans in further detail with a member of our friendly team, get in touch today.

"First class service, I must mention Adrian & Ash on an excellent deal & swift turn around under the short notice I had to buying a new van. Slight delay in the delivery of the van from manufacturers end but Adrian agreed to cover the cost of a hire van until my new van was delivered which allowed me to continue working. its the first time i've purchased a van without physically entering a dealership and i wouldn't hesitate to do it again."
