Fuso Canter Dropside Review

The Fuso Canter Dropside At A Glance

Looking for a versatile Dropside variant with a capable payload and features aplenty? The Fuso Canter Dropside is a genuine dark horse within the crowded market, excelling where some other recognisable manufacturers fail. Particularly useful for tradespeople in need of a reliable everyday work vehicle, this adaptable automobile is a fantastic option if you’re searching for a dropside that’s the size of a van – but built more like a truck! Japanese manufacturer Fuso have made a name for themselves supplying larger vehicles and buses, evident within the various design choices of this modern van/truck hybrid.

Though seamlessly functioning as required within this Dropside variant (functionality can be mastered by even the most amateur of users), those interested can acquire this vehicle in a variety of body options. And none are lacking the routine amenities of this model. With its double rear wheels and tough ladder frame chassis, appearance may seem bulky and clunky, but there’s plenty more than initially meets the eye. Power windows, eco-mode, and central locking make it a highly sought-after vehicle for a variety of businesses, which we’ll discuss further in the ‘Interior’ section.

Read ahead for our detailed thoughts on this fantastic van option, including insight on varied comfort features, payload, specs and even the variants available within the Van Sales UK online catalogue.

Engines and Spec

Many business stakeholders look at various metrics and specs as a matter of priority, theorising that a van’s details on-paper are as good as any test drive – however this is rarely the case unfortunately. The Fuso Canter Dropside makes all the right impressions both in theory and performance, boasting not only a highly competitive payload allowance of 980kg, but also a fuel-efficient 3.0-litre engine. Regarding power, 300 Nm of torque at 1,300-3,000 rpm and a BHP of 130 pairs a sustainable eco-mode option – absolutely ideal for when you’re cruising along, and don’t require the maximum output of this surprisingly powerful automobile.

The Fuso Canter Dropside can go almost wherever a van can – and has a sleek cab width of under 2 metres. Driven on a regular UK vehicle licence with no further training. And as navigable as you need, The Canter’s strongest feature is easily its steering. Direct, firm, and communicative, this automobile feels linked to the road when turning, and gives the driver plenty of information regarding the level grip on the road below. Leave your anxieties to one side when you buckle up in this premium Dropside – this is no ordinary run of the mill tradesperson van.

Interior

While design is not the Fuso Canter Dropside’s biggest asset, there is certainly plenty of space for the tools and materials of your trade. The impressive dashboard is completely reshaped, with central locking and electric windows as standard, though there could certainly be additional cab storage if we had to name any gripe, bluetooth radio and a CD player are welcome additions, if somewhat outdated. Disappointingly, the driver’s airbag and ABS brakes are paid-for options at £300 and £850 respectively – rather costly for otherwise standard details.

For those anticipating a lot of time spent on the roads (refuse collectors or groundworkers perhaps), the ride is impressive for a cab-over vehicle, and seating position, despite being very upright, is comfortable enough. Ideal for those working in an assortment of industries, including landscaping, bricklaying, roofing and fencing, the sides of this bulky van can be easily dropped, making it functional on-site, and exceptional for loading and unloading when time isn’t on your side. The van is simply made for carrying aggregates such as gravel and sand, as well as bricks and blocks, paving slabs or drainage materials.

Last but not least, insulation inside the van has also been increased for quieter running, and door apertures are wider – with a larger windscreen to create an extra airy and spacious feel. This equates to more head and legroom for the occupants. Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Premium carrying capacity
  • Roomy interior
  • Payload allowance is satisfactory

Cons

  • Upright seating position isn’t the comfiest
  • May not be the most visually appealing to some customers
  • Airbag and ABS brakes are paid extras

The Verdict

Overall, the Fuso Canter Dropside is a reliable, strong and durable van suitable for a wide range of uses by tradespeople. Boasting a spacious cab, and the longest body length in its segment, there’s plenty of room for all the tools and materials you require. Boasting comfortable seating, electric windows, a Bluetooth speaker and a reverse warning device, the Fuso Canter Dropside has all you need for a long and comfortable ride. Ultimately, the Fuso  is a small, manoeuvrable vehicle with dual rear wheels that resemble trucks, and a tough ladder frame chassis – neither purely a truck or a van, but borrowing the best from both.
