MAN eTGE Tipper and Maxus E Deliver 9 Tipper

In the last few years, you might have noticed a bit of a change on UK roads. Rather than the throaty growls of diesel power, more and more vans are being powered electrically. This is partly a response to government regulations and the financial incentives of “going green”, the cheap operational costs of electric vans, as well as their clear potential for technological innovation.

If you’re interested in a new van, choosing a tipper variant could also be a very wise choice. Designed with an open-top cargo area, they allow for the efficient loading and unloading of loose materials. Tippers manage to transport large, heavy volumes of material without extensive manual labour or difficulty.

Both the MAN eTGE and Maxus E-Deliver 9 are two excellent electric vans available in the tipper variant. We’ve decided to pit them both together to learn more about each van and which might be most suitable for your commercial needs.

Engines and Spec

Underneath the MAN eTGE Tipper is a 100kW electric motor, able to produce an impressive 290Nm of torque. The 36kWh lithium-ion battery is able to provide a range of around 75 miles on a single charge. Whilst zippy and powerful with its electric motor, this mileage isn’t exactly class-leading for an electric van.

However, it must be argued that the eTGE was designed for urban delivery and construction applications, where there is a need for a quiet and emission-free vehicle. Whilst it might not flourish when travelling long distances, it is effective in what MAN have manufactured it for

The MAN eTGE also makes up for this short mileage with its charge time, which can charge the battery to 80% capacity in just 45 minutes (when using a DC fast charger). It also has regenerative braking, which helps to recharge the battery while driving.

On the other hand, the Maxus e-Deliver 9 Tipper is fitted with a larger 150kW electric motor, producing around 310Nm of torque. It is available in two battery options; the 51.5 kWh or 72 kWh. This results in the Maxus having a maximum driving range of 112 miles for the smaller battery and 146 miles for the larger one.

The Maxus’ battery can be charged in around 45 minutes with rapid charging points and takes between 6 to 8 hours to reach full battery with at-home charging points. These are very competitive mileage figures, and make the Maxus e-Deliver 9 more comfortable driving longer distances than the urban travel-oriented MAN eTGE.

A valuable part of a tipper van is its payload capacity, determining how much weight the van can lift and transport. Whilst not matching the driving range of the Maxus, it is in payload capacity that the MAN eTGE tipper excels. It manages a muscular 1,550 kg with a versatile tipping angle of 75 degrees, edging out the Maxus’ payload capacity of 1,245kg and tipping angle of 60 degrees.

Interior

Moving inside the MAN eTGE, the interior is spacious, comfortable, and impressively quiet. The silent noiselessness of the van makes it perfect for use in the construction sector, whereby work may have to be carried out during unsociable hours and in areas with noise regulation.

The eTGE Tipper also has a number of safety features, including a rearview camera, parking sensors, and an emergency brake assist system. These driver assistance features are especially useful for a tipper variant, and even more practical for a vehicle designed for urban usage, as it ensures the driver can understand their surroundings in tight conditions.

The Maxus e-Deliver 9 has an equally spacious interior, which whilst not exactly luxurious, is incredibly practical. The black design and chrome display is effectively designed and rather stylish when considering it is made of plastic. It is easy to operate and generally good for most uses.

The one premium touch of the Maxus e-Deliver 9 Tipper is the tablet-like infotainment touchscreen display. Dominating the dashboard, this feature adds some class to the e-Deliver 9’s interior and makes navigation intuitive and easy.

The Verdict

Overall, both the MAN eTGE Tipper and Maxus e-Deliver 9 Tipper are two excellent electric vans that work effectively in tipper variants. The eDeliver 9 excels in driving range and driver safety features, with the MAN eTGE impressing in its suitability in a tipper variant. It could be argued that whilst Maxus is a better all-around van, the MAN is a fantastic van for commercial uses of urban construction and delivery.

However, it is hard to distinguish between the overall quality of the van as that depends on what you, the customer, require from them. At Vanaways, we have a van for all commercial uses, with variants ranging from Tippers to Lutons.

If you’re interested in either the MAN eTGE Tipper or Maxus e-Deliver 9 Tipper, they are available online in a range of different variants, as are a wide array of other commercial vehicles. "Paige was outstanding in her responsiveness to what presented as a serious problem for our company. The finance company used by her company caused unnecessary and significant delays in the delivery of our van - the pain of which was mitigated somewhat by Paige's proactive communication, informative and realistic communication and very professional demeanour. I'd recommend her and she meant our view of Vanaways was overall positive."
