Maxus E-Deliver 9 Tipper vs Mercedes-Benz eSprinter Tipper

Due to clear environmental benefits, low operating costs, and government incentives, more and more manufacturers are making electric versions of their most popular light commercial vehicles. Both Maxus and Mercedes-Benz are two examples of this. Both released in 2020, the Maxus E-Deliver 9 and Mercedes Benz E-Sprinter were electric variants of their respective Deliver 9 and Sprinter models.

For those unaware, a tipper van is a light commercial vehicle variant designed to carry and transport loose materials such as gravel, sand, soil, and construction waste. It utilises a tipping mechanism which allows the cargo bed to be raised and the contents to be deposited onto the ground or into another receptacle. An immensely practical light commercial vehicle, the tipper van is commonly used in the construction, mining, and waste management industries, where there is a need to transport large volumes of heavy materials.

Due to the practicality and effectiveness of the tipper van, we’ve pitted together the Maxus E-Deliver 9 and Mercedes Benz E-Sprinter in their tipper variants. This is in an effort to learn more about each van whilst helping you evaluate whether it is best for you and your commercial vehicle needs. Read on to find out more.

Engines and Spec

The Maxus E-Delivery 9 Tipper is powered by an electric motor with an output of 150kW (or 204 PS), producing 310Nm of torque. This allows it to reach a respectable top speed of 75mph.  Whilst its 52kWh version has a 112-mile range, when fitted with the 89kWh battery pack, the E-Deliver 9 is able to reach an impressive 219 miles on a single charge.

This makes it an ideal vehicle for long journeys and deliveries, and for a tipper variant, this is immensely practical, as it is comfortable carrying construction materials over vast distances. Even more usefully, the E-Deliver 9 has fast-charging capabilities that allow it to reach 80% battery capacity in 45 minutes.

On the other hand, the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter Tipper has a power output of 95kW (116 PS), managing 295Nm of torque and a top speed of 50mph. The 55kWh battery has a maximum range of 96 miles on a single charge.

Whilst this is less than half of the Maxus E-Deliver, the figure is still respectable and, as a Tipper variant, it will nonetheless be effective for carrying materials on shorter journeys from site to site. The Mercedes also has fast-charging options, as it can reach 80% charge in a mere 30 minutes, making up for its somewhat undermining driving range.

For a Tipper variant that primarily is used for carrying loose or bulky materials, the payload capacity is of vital importance. The Maxus E-Deliver 9 boasts an impressive 1480kg, whilst the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter only manages 731kg. This being said, what the Mercedes-Benz lacks in payload capacity, it easily makes up for in load volume, which is 5.5 cubic metres, a whopping amount compared to the 1.2 cubic metres of the Maxus.

Interior

The interior of the Maxus E-Deliver 9 Tipper revolves around a tablet-like 10-inch infotainment system, clearly displaying maps for intuitive and easy navigation. The cab of the Maxus has a sleek, chrome-effect quality which is practically designed and rather stylish. Whilst a lot of the interior is made of plastic and doesn’t feel of premium quality, it makes for an effective (albeit generic) cab for which most users would have few complaints.

The E-Deliver 9 is also host to a series of safety measures, such as lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, and blind spot detection. This can help to ensure a secure and safe driving experience, especially helpful for helping the driver keep focus when travelling over long distances.

Moving onto the Mercedes eSprinter Tipper’s interior, presented to the driver is a comfortable space with an adjustable driver’s seat and armrest. Practical storage compartments fill the cab with spacious cubbies and useful cup holders, making longer-distance driving feel easy and comfortable.

The eSprinter features a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen display with a rearview camera. With this, parking and navigation in tight areas feel manageable and effective, even in a lengthy Tipper variant. The Mercedes is also fitted with comprehensive safety features, something of a trademark feature for the German manufacturers’ consistent focus on innovating the driving experience. These features include crosswind assist, attention assist, and active brake assist, additions which help prevent accidents by keeping the driver awake and aware of what’s on the road ahead.

The Verdict

Overall, both the Maxus E-Deliver 9 and Mercedes-Benz eSprinter are well-made vans that are effective as a Tipper variant. Whilst the Maxus boasts a greater mileage and load capacity, the Mercedes-Benz features impressive load space, an especially comfortable interior, and cutting-edge safety features.

"Paige was outstanding in her responsiveness to what presented as a serious problem for our company. The finance company used by her company caused unnecessary and significant delays in the delivery of our van - the pain of which was mitigated somewhat by Paige's proactive communication, informative and realistic communication and very professional demeanour. I'd recommend her and she meant our view of Vanaways was overall positive."
