Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Tipper vs Mercedes-Benz eSprinter Tipper

When you think of Mercedes-Benz, you often think of luxury models speeding around the streets. What you might not consider is the practical side of the business. But just like most other brands, Mercedes-Benz isn’t just focused on luxury sports cars, but commercial vehicles as well.

Take the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter for example. It is a light commercial vehicle that has been manufactured and sold since 1995 as a large van, chassis cab, minibus and pickup truck. It is the largest model offered in the Mercedes-Benz van range, so is often the best choice for businesses looking to carry a lot of cargo at once.

Since 1995 the van has evolved and is now in its third generation. This van is the first generation to include a front-wheel-drive and came with a new range of technology and comfort features. This new generation was released in 2018, and in the same year, Mercedes-Benz announced the release of the eSprinter. A large battery-electric version of the Sprinter, it was initially available as a high-roof panel van but has since been released in other body types.

One of these body types is a tipper lorry variant. A tipper is a van that has a rear platform that can be raised, allowing the cargo to be dumped out with ease. Both electric and diesel versions of the Sprinter Tipper are available to buy from Vanaways, and we have put together this helpful guide to the features of both so you can make an informed decision on what to buy.

Engines and Spec

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Tipper is powered by a 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine, which debuted in 2020 to give the vehicle a power output ranging from 114hp to 190hp, and a torque output of 300 Nm and 440 Nm. As mentioned in our full review, the van is available in the new front-wheel drive variant, as well as four-wheel and rear-wheel drive available.

The eSprinter comes in two battery variants, 41 or 55 kW-hr with an electric traction output of 85 kW. This gives it a range of around 100 km, but this can vary depending on the driving conditions. In terms of cargo space, the Sprinter has a very large cargo length (3320mm by 2040mm) which enables it to easily tip loads of over 1000 out. The eSprinter offers an identical-sized cargo length, due to the differences between the models being in the chassis and not the cargo area.

Interior

The interior of the Sprinter and eSprinter is very comfortable for a crew, with a double cab option available for those looking to transport a whole crew. The single cab option has comfortable seats for up to 3 people, with the double crew cab adding an additional row of 3 seats, meaning you can transport up to 6 if needed.

They have an infotainment system built into the newer models, featuring a helpful geocoded map system, voice control and more. Like many electric vehicles, the eSprinter interior differs slightly from the diesel version. You can expect slightly different controls, which will helpfully display battery level and range instead of fuel levels.

As mentioned in our review of the eSprinter, you can benefit from a silent cab experience, with the electric engine producing little noise when compared to a combustion engine. It has a spacious and clean interior, which will give you a sleek feel as you go about your business. There is plenty of storage available, and you can easily adjust the steering wheel for your ideal height and rake.

The Verdict

Overall the Sprinter and eSprinter Tipper are both great vehicles capable of carrying a large amount of cargo and dumping it with ease. For distance and capacity, you may want to consider the Sprinter, but the eSprinter is great for being environmentally friendly as you go about your business.

"First class service, I must mention Adrian & Ash on an excellent deal & swift turn around under the short notice I had to buying a new van. Slight delay in the delivery of the van from manufacturers end but Adrian agreed to cover the cost of a hire van until my new van was delivered which allowed me to continue working. its the first time i've purchased a van without physically entering a dealership and i wouldn't hesitate to do it again."
