Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vs Mercedes-Benz eSprinter Electric

In terms of popular large van options, you’ll be hard pressed to find one as widely appreciated as the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. Versatile, bulky and able to serve a number of differing purposes, there are plenty of reasons to consider this model from the German manufacturer. Considering the well-known reliability of the Sprinter, an EV conversion was inevitable – therefore the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter debuted in 2019. With both versions of this classic light commercial vehicle still immensely popular, we decided to put them up against each other, to see which van comes out on top.

All-in-all, the Sprinter range from Mercedes Has been a leading contender for years,  there’s a good reason why this van is so popular. Since the Sprinter was first released in the mid-90s,, it has been the most popular van in the whole of Europe – big shoes to fill for the efficient yet somewhat different eSprinter. As a converted all-electric version, expectations are lofty, and this RV model seamlessly integrates modern technology into a large yet practical body. Both the conventional sprinter and electric variant are available with short, medium, long, and extra-long wheelbases, as well as high or low roof panels for added flexibility.

eSprinter offers reliability, quality and comfort, and is a sure contender for tradespeople on the hunt for a van capable of making your daily commute a whole lot easier. Likewise, each and every criteria is covered within the specs and performance of the sprinter, with Mercedes’s adaptability once again putting it at the forefront of a consumer’s needs. Continue reading and allow us to take you through some of the prominent points of comparison, as well as where these vans deviate. Meanwhile, for a wide array of diesel, petrol and electric vans, don’t hesitate to take a look at the Vanaways online catalogue – regularly updated with new deals and offers.

Engines and Spec

Of course, one of the main selling points for any EV (aside from the obvious sustainability) is the ability to quickly charge overnight or over short periods. A full charge from a mains outlet will take about 8 hours, whereas a fast charge option can top the battery of the eSprinter up to 80% in under 30 minutes. As with all modern electric vehicles, running costs are also significantly lower than petrol and diesel counterparts – and this is also true of the Mercedes Sprinter. Though the outright cost of an electric van will likely be higher, there are savings to be made throughout your ownership, avoiding the ever-rising prices of conventional fuel by acquiring your own domestic charging station. Seeking an inexpensive work van with low mileage and proven efficiency? Alternatively, review finance offers for flexible payment terms.

Concerning the power output of the eSprinter, the electric van is powered by a 55kWh battery, capable of delivering a range of up to 96 miles. Realistically, this won’t be suitable for a long distance delivery driver or individual who regularly travels up and down the motorway – though this capacity is more than suitable for city driving. Where the two vehicles differ is this exact department. The diesel 2022 Sprinter models are fitted with a powerful 2.0-litre turbodiesel engines replacing the 2.1-litre options of the 2018 generation – plenty of bang for your buck. A maximum 190 horsepower allows for a surprisingly smoother and quieter journey, and the comfortable driving experience was immediately noticeable within our original Mercedes-Benz Sprinter overview.

Interior

Rather disappointingly, the eSprinter is only available in one trim model, therefore drivers aren’t given much choice regarding interior equipment and tech. Though the additional cab storage is appreciated, there’s certainly room for improvement when it comes to equipping this space with usable features and desirable gadgets. Away from the non-necessities, the interior is well-built and spacious, with adjustable seats, great accessibility and a neatly designed dashboard to boot. If a well-designed, high-quality cab is what you’re after, the eSprinter is an excellent choice, minus add-ons. We covered this in more detail within our Mercedes-Benz eSprinter standalone review.

Mercedes have been continually working on the features of the non-electric Sprinter, making modern releases much more luxurious than previous models. Improved soundproofing, textured plastic trimmings and large open areas are just a few notable additions, not to mention the futuristic dashboard navigation system. Comparing the payload of both (Within two 3.0t models, to keep things fair), there isn’t much between the pair. As you would assume, the eSprinter falls just short of his classic counterpart, with a reasonable payload of 731kg. The same size diesel Sprinter can hold a maximum of 925kg – still nothing to write home about within what is categorised as a ‘large van’ but nothing overly poor either.

The Verdict/Snap shot

As tough as it is to compare a classic Mercedes-Benz Sprinter with any new electric van, this was certainly eye-opening, and saw the EV nudge out the Sprinter in a few selected categories. For the economical among us, an electric van variant which boasts the trademark Mercedes quality will go down a storm, however, short, sharp bursts aren’t for everyone, and the market-leading Mercedes-Benz Sprinter still leads the pack for distance driving.
