Mercedes-Benz Vito Double Cab Review

The Mercedes-Benz Vito Double Cab at a glance

When it comes to style and appearance, there’s certainly no denying that Mercedes-Benz oozes class; the Vito is no exception. From the sleek curves of the outer bodywork to details such as the leather steering wheel, passenger and driver are sure to be comfortable, whether you’re heading to town or embarking on a longer trip.

First launched in 2015, Mercedes-Benz’s Vito range has youth on its side; every aspect of this van, from the bodywork to the chassis, was newly introduced. Almost ten years on, the Vito is still going strong, providing an option that is powerful, comfortable and reasonably priced.

As the only medium-sized van to offer buyers a choice between three body lengths and front or rear-wheel drive, tradespeople and professionals from all sectors are sure to find a model that suits them. Whether you’re looking for extra seats or a little extra load room, the Vito is a competitive choice.

Below, we’ll share our thoughts on the Vito’s engine, interior, efficiency and more.

Engines and Spec

As mentioned earlier, Mercedes-Benz have definitely upped their game in terms of variety; the newer models of the Vito Crew Cab are available in 3 lengths, L1, L2 and L3, which measure in at 4895mm, 5140mm or 5370mm. Of course, the additional row of seating featured in the crew cab variant does reduce payload and storage capacity slightly but is more than worth it in our opinion.

As a rough guide, payloads range from 945kg on Mercedes-Benz’s L1 Progressive model to 835kg on the L3 Premium variant. Please feel free to get in touch with us to discuss these specifications in further detail.

Below the bonnet, prospective buyers are faced with either a 1.6 or 2.1-litre diesel engine, depending on the drive model. As expected the rear wheel drive is kitted with Mercedes’ larger engine, ideal for powering heavier loads and providing extra torque. Of course, the 1.6-litre model is fine for shorter, lighter journeys, but surprisingly it doesn’t quite compare in terms of power or fuel efficiency.

Interior and Seating

As you may have guessed, the Mercedes-Benz Crew van features two rows of seating, enough for 6 team members to travel at once.

However, the somewhat unusual layout of certain features may deter traditionalists. Mercedes have kept the foot-operated parking brake that appeared on older models. Though this may take a little getting used to, and has divided the opinions of the van world, it does make stop-start driving on hills a little safer and easier.

Another somewhat obscure detail that is worth noting in the Vito, is the design of the gear stick on automatic models. Mounted behind the steering wheel, as if it were a windscreen control, this quirky design feature may cause a little confusion if you’re used to another van.

Though the Vito’s interior does lack many of the technological modernities of competitors, it still features Bluetooth connectivity. In our opinion, upgrading to the infotainment system is well worth it, for the sake of DAB radio if nothing else.

Comfort and Driving Experience

When it comes to comfort, the Vito truly excels. It should be noted that both 1.6 and 2.1-litre editions are more than capable of providing a smooth ride, however, the larger engine is quieter when travelling at speed, making it ideal for motorway driving, overtaking and safe cruising.

If you’re stuck between a rear or front-wheel drive van, it is definitely worth considering the type of work that your vehicle will be used for. For tradespeople looking for a way to lug heavy equipment from a to b, we’d recommend the RWD L2 or L3 model, as the extra power and space will ensure a comfortable drive, no matter the load.

Pros & Cons

List 2-3 pros and 2-3 cons in the following format:

Pros

  • Ideal for long journeys
  • Cost-effective
  • Choice of body lengths

Cons

  • Unorthodox Control Layout
  • Outdated Cab Design

The Verdict

Overall, the Veto is an incredibly solid choice of van. Owing to the choice of models and drive chains, tradespeople and van lovers alike are sure to find a variant that suits their needs.

Despite the somewhat dated in-cab design, this boasts a wide range of benefits that overshadow the lack of fancy tech. It looks great, drives beautifully and is an ideal choice for individuals likely to embark on longer journeys and motorway adventures.

"Staff here are so courteous & helpful, genuine in how they talk rather than that dreaded ‘business speak’. Reception and offices are modern & relaxing to be in, very cool music in background too! Some place just give you the basics - but I found Vanaways completely charming throughout, really appreciated thank you."
