Peugeot e-Boxer Electric Luton Review

The Peugeot e-Boxer Luton at a glance

2022 saw the release of the e-Boxer range – based on the bestselling Boxer van, the last of Peugeot’s models to receive this conversion. Based on the firm’s large diesel van, the Peugeot e-Boxer Luton debuted on the market as a commercial van with unbeatable efficiency and adaptability. Although a third-party conversion developed by UK-based electrification specialist BEDEO, the e-Boxer Luton isn’t compromised on quality, and rather feels as though it is designed to appeal to a more niche demographic.

Luton vans are generally an ideal choice for businesses who need the space to transport high volumes of goods efficiently. With an extra alcove above the cab, every aspect of the Luton design is optimised for storage and practicality. As a result, Luton vans are frequently used by removal companies, as their vast load area allows them to transport big quantities of large, heavy items without having to make numerous trips. However, Lutons are a good choice for a number of fields, as the vast load area allows for the transportation of a versatile amount of goods.

Read on to find out more about what the Peugeot e-Boxer Luton has to offer.

Engines and Spec

Replacing the standard Peugeot Boxer 2.2 BlueHDi diesel engine is a 90kW electric motor, which is powered by a 75kWh battery pack. With this larger battery pack, the e-Boxer Luton yields a driving range of 154 miles per charge, though this number could naturally decrease when driving with a heavy load in the back.

When using a 50kW DC rapid charge point, it’ll take no more than an hour to charge to 80%, although with a typical 7.4kW Wallbox charger that you tend to find at homes or workplaces, charging can take up to 12 hours. The van’s charging socket is conveniently located in the same place as the fuel filler on the diesel van, just behind the passenger door.

In spite of the fact that the e-Boxer Luton gives out a relatively modest power output of 118hp, the electric drive means that the driving experience is smooth and quiet. It also manages to keep pace with traffic relatively well in urban environments. Light steering allows for straightforward manoeuvring, and selecting behind drive and reverse is equally simple with the press of a button. Rear parking sensors help drivers to judge where the back of this large van is heading, while a rear beeper ensures that other road users know when you’re reversing.

Interior

Inside the cab, the e-Boxer Luton doesn’t look all that different to its diesel counterpart, save for a few minor adjustments. One of the most obvious changes is the removal of the van’s gear lever. Whilst the smaller e-Partner and e-Expert use the same toggle drive selector that can be found in Peugeot’s electric passenger cars, the e-Boxer Luton features a large plastic bank and a series of silver metal buttons to choose between Drive, Neutral and Reverse, making selection the right drive mode nice and easy. A digital display has also been added to the corner of the rearview mirror – separate from the standard-fit 5-inch touchscreen – that informs the driver of the charge status of the battery and how much range there is.

Thanks to the fact that the e-Boxer Luton’s battery pack is located underneath the floor, its load capacity hasn’t been impacted at all. There’s up to 20 cubic metres of cargo space available in the Luton, and it can comfortably carry over a tonne in payload capacity. The e-Boxer Luton is also available with an optional tail-lift, which allows loading and unloading jobs to be carried out with ease. Heavy objects can simply be placed onto the lift and raised into the van with the push of a button.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Cheaper to run than diesel counterpart
  • Smooth and quiet to driver
  • Choice of battery sizes

Cons

  • Limited power output
  • Doesn’t keep up on performance
  • The cabin could be more refined

The Verdict

If you’re in the market for a large commercial van that can cover moderate urban mileages and has ample load space for transporting large volumes of goods, then the Peugeot e-Boxer Luton could be a great choice for you. The Luton design is naturally adaptable, and the decent driving range combined with a solid load volume make the e-Boxer Luton a worthy contender for removal companies, delivery drivers or tradespeople who need more space than average for equipment.

"Paige was outstanding in her responsiveness to what presented as a serious problem for our company. The finance company used by her company caused unnecessary and significant delays in the delivery of our van - the pain of which was mitigated somewhat by Paige's proactive communication, informative and realistic communication and very professional demeanour. I'd recommend her and she meant our view of Vanaways was overall positive."
