Renault Master Tipper vs Renault Master Z.E. Electric Tipper

From landscapers and gardeners to removal companies and sole traders, the benefits of a tipper van are no secret. Be it payload and storage volume or the loading, unloading and transportation of bulky materials, these models are a tradesperson’s best friend. Of course, choosing the right model is no small task, and depends on your specific requirements.

Among the many giants of the van world is the Renault Master; this long-trusted model has been a favourite of van lovers across the world since it first hit the roads. However, prospective buyers are now faced with more choices than ever, such as the decision between electric or diesel power.

As we take steps towards a more sustainable collective future, many businesses and individuals are making the jump to all-electric vehicles. They’re a sure choice in terms of environmentally friendly driving, but when it comes to practicality, it can be a little less straightforward.

Fear not, here at Van Sales UK, we’ve compiled a van vs van review between the Renault Master Tipper and the Master Z.E. Tipper equivalent.

From engine specs and handling to payload and interior, read on to hear our thoughts.

Engines and Spec

First things first, let’s see how these two vans compare in terms of engine, battery and power. To begin, we’ll take a look at the diesel model, which is powered by a revamped 2.3-litre dCi turbo diesel engine, capable of providing some serious torque. With a 6-speed manual transmission, 180hp and a choice between front and rear-wheel drive, it feels as if there really is an option for everyone.

Aside from a powerful engine, the Master Tipper also boasts an impressive towing capacity, with the thin rear-wheel drive variant able to pull up to 3,000kg without sacrificing drivability or comfort. Additionally, the tipper bed offers a payload of 1,217kg, ideal for the transportation of tools, bulk goods and heavy materials or debris.

So, how does this versatile van’s all-electric sibling compare? Before we jump in, it’s worth noting that the Master Z.E. has a tough reputation to live up to, but it does so impressively well. Though this van’s R75 electric motor isn’t the fastest on the market, it packs a real punch with 225 Nm of instant torque, ideal for heavy loads and zippy city manoeuvres.

Clearly designed for use in urban environments and clean air zones, this metrocentric vehicle also boasts a number of well-considered features, such as an eco-mode for reduced power output while queuing. Additionally, the Master Z.E.’s regenerative braking technology means that the van is able to convert slowed momentum back into electricity!

Interior

As we poke our heads inside the Master’s cab, there are a number of incredible features worth praising, as well as a few controversial additions when it comes to the electric version.

The regular diesel Master is sure to wow drivers and passengers alike with its well-designed interior and spacious cabin. There is an abundance of storage space, including cubbies, shelves and drink holders while still providing three comfortable seats with impressive visibility and driving position.

In terms of technology, the Master is equally as impressive. Most notably, the cab features a swivelling R-Link screen mounted in place of a rearview mirror. Of course, the Master’s infotainment system also offers satellite navigation, Bluetooth connectivity and DAB radio.

So, how does the Master Z.E.’s cab compare? If we’re completely honest, it isn’t quite as impressive as the diesel version; it feels a little like an electric conversion, rather than a re-designed release. Perhaps the most obvious difference between the two vehicles is the lack of engine noise in the Z.E.’s cab, making the sound of the road much more noticeable which is far from ideal.

Aside from the slightly irritating noise levels inside the cab, there aren’t too many differences between the electric and diesel models. That said, the Z.E. is a comfortable drive, with a single-speed transmission and impressive handling capabilities. For inner-city navigation, this is a great choice of vehicle.

The Verdict/Snapshot

Both the Renault Master and the Master Z.E Tipper models offer drivers a wide range of practical benefits. These vans are ideal for transporting bulky goods and make loading and tipping debris a dream. However, when it comes to choosing between the two, it is a hard call.

Intended use is, of course,  a major factor when weighing up the two vehicles. For those looking to navigate built-up urban environments, stop-start traffic and quick back and forths, the Master Z.E. Tipper might just be a better choice. However, for those planning longer journeys and looking for a little more power and speed, the Diesel model is a notch above.

Here at Van Sales UK, we understand that choosing a vehicle is no small decision. To discuss either of these options in further detail, feel free to get in touch with a member of our expert team.

Some place just give you the basics - but I found Vanaways completely charming throughout, really appreciated thank you."
