Securing Your Van for the Darker Nights

With van theft on the rise, it’s important to take more security precautions to keep it safe. As the weather gets colder, the nights get darker and that gives thieves even more opportunity to steal your beloved van or anything left inside. This is particularly worrying if you have just invested in new van deals for your business or if you spent a lot of money to perfectly convert your van.

If so, read on to learn how you can better secure your van during the darker months.

Keep your fob away from doors

Even though we tend to spend more time at home in the winter, this doesn’t stop thieves from stealing your van. It’s not a good idea to keep your key fob next to any doors or windows as this gives thieves a chance to reach in and take them. However, it’s also best not to keep your keys upstairs in your bedroom for example. As you don’t want to give any potentially violent criminals a reason to go up where you or your family are sleeping during a break-in.

Don’t leave your van unattended while warming up

In the dark mornings or nights when you are heading out in your van, it can be tempting to leave your car running unattended while it warms up and defrosts. If you want to avoid your van being stolen, it’s smart not to do this and only let your car run while you’re in it.

Don’t advertise your belongings

Make a habit of clearing your belongings every night when you park your van. Whether you store work equipment or tools or keep expensive tech in your van, it’s best not to advertise it. Move it out of sight or take it home with you so thieves can’t window shop in your car. If a thief sees something expensive on display, they won’t hesitate to break a window to get ahold of it.

Double check you’ve locked your van each time

Leaving your van and locking it is something we tend to do subconsciously, so we may not even be aware that we’ve done it. Try to be more switched on when you’re leaving your van for the night as one simple mistake could lead to your belongings or van being stolen.

Add security to your home

If your van is parked on a driveway or in front of your home, consider adding extra security. Things such as smart doorbells, security lights and security cameras are a great way to deter thieves as they are then aware that they are being watched.
