Tipper: Fiat E-Ducato vs Ford E-Transit

Over the course of the 21st century, the electric vehicle has gone from strength to strength. While electric vehicle take up was initially slow, increased concerns about the environment and air quality combined with new mandatory low emission zones means that electric vehicle adoption has accelerated, particularly in the commercial vehicle sector. Now here we are in the present day, with an exceptional range of electric offerings to choose from.

Today we will be comparing Ford’s electric offering with an electric vehicle from equally well-known manufacturer, Fiat. With a contemporary electric motor and battery pack, the Fiat E-Ducato is an eco-friendly solution for carrying large items and deliveries for your business. By contrast, the Transit has been a commercial vehicle of Ford’s since 1965, it was originally just a cargo van but was then expanded into a range of body types. The most recent generation of Ford Transit vans were introduced in 2014 with multiple improvements and then in 2020, Ford announced the release of their brand new battery electric cargo van, the E-Transit.

Like many electric vans, the Fiat E-Ducato Tipper and the Ford E-Transit Tipper are expensive to buy outright. However the combination of the low running costs and the option of buying on finance from Vanaways makes this a much more cost-effective solution.

Engines and Spec

The Fiat E-Ducato comes with either a 3-module 47kWh  or a 5-module 79kWH battery. The smaller one has a maximum range of 146 miles, while the larger one has an impressive range of over 200 miles. This range is particularly noteworthy for an electric vehicle and is not to be sniffed at. The engine has a compact design, so you won’t notice a reduction in capacity due to the size and weight, which is an issue many electric vehicles suffer from.

As mentioned in the full review of the Fiat E-Ducato Tipper, the van has three driving modes. Normal is a great balance between performance and economy while slipping into Eco mode will help to increase the range of the vehicle. Finally, Power is best used for going uphill and when carrying a heavy load, which you will probably be doing if driving a tipper.

When comparing the two electric vans, there is not much that sets them apart. Powered by a 67 kWh battery and an electric motor that delivers 198 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque, the Ford E-Transit Tipper boasts an impressive 196 miles of range which is a significant distance for a large payload electric vehicle.

As is detailed upon in our full review of the Ford E-Transit Tipper, the 3-Module battery takes just under 8 hours to reach 100% on a Standard Charge, while a Quick Charge takes just under 5 hours and a Fast Charge will get it up to 80% in just 50 minutes.

In terms of payload capacity, the Ford E-Transit’s 2400 kg maximum weight dwarves  the E-Transit’s 1,616 kg. Despite this, both vans are comfortable with carrying heavy materials – the basic essential requirement for a Tipper. However, if you’re looking for a bit more flexibility in payload performance, the Ford might be preferable.

Interior

The interior of the E-Ducato is robust and practical, making it perfect for any business that needs it. It has two trim levels, with touchscreen infotainment systems of different sizes. The higher trim also includes extras such as satnav and Apple CarPlay.

By comparison, the interior of the Ford E-Transit is clean, stylish and well-thought-out. It has a large and easy-to-use 12” infotainment system and an instrument cluster that clearly displays the power use, allowing a driver to see how effectively they are using the car so they can improve the way they drive. In terms of technology, the Ford E-Transit Tipper also offers a generously sized 12” inch touchscreen which can be used as both a media player and a navigation tool.

The Verdict

Both of these electric vans are extremely reliable models that will easily be capable of being used by many industries. A tipper van is a great choice for many businesses, offering a large payload and the ability to easily dump a vast amount quickly and with little effort. This has made it extremely popular for businesses that deal with a lot of loose aggregates or other materials that are sturdy enough to handle being tipped, such as construction companies.

"Paige was outstanding in her responsiveness to what presented as a serious problem for our company. The finance company used by her company caused unnecessary and significant delays in the delivery of our van - the pain of which was mitigated somewhat by Paige's proactive communication, informative and realistic communication and very professional demeanour. I'd recommend her and she meant our view of Vanaways was overall positive."
