It’s no secret that electric vans and cars have become far more advanced in recent years. Since the drastic improvements in electric motor capabilities and battery technology, the electric vehicle really has gone from strength to strength. Nowadays, we find ourselves in an era where electric cars really are a genuine competitor to standard diesel vehicles. So, perhaps expectedly, many van owners are now switching to electric vans permanently.
The electric van is of course, extremely cheap to run and has the added benefit of helping the involvement as well. The human race is now gripped tightly by the threat of climate change and anything we can do to at least slow this rapid change is, of course, very welcome. It’s no wonder really then why so many people are making the switch to electric vehicles.
If you’re after a Luton van, then you’ve probably heard of the Vauxhall Movano and the Volkswagen Crafter. However, these vans both come with highly competitive electric variants. So, the question is, which one is better? Naturally, the answer to this comes down to a myriad of factors, and each van has its own selling points. In this blog, we’ll outline some of the key information to try to make this decision a little easier for you. So, you can get back on the road in a vehicle that’s right for you in no time at all.
Engines and Spec
So, both of these advanced vehicles use an electric motor powered by a series of high-capacity batteries. This electric motor has a few standout characteristics that make it perfect for road vehicles and even better for vans. The first major factor is torque. Engines with a high torque capacity are far better at pulling heavy loads and towing large trailers and cargo due to the power being transferred into the wheels almost instantly. With electric motors, this happens in the blink of an eye and much, much quicker than any petrol or diesel engine. So, you’ll find pulling a full cargo up a hill or a heavy trailer on the motorway far easier than ever before.
The E-Crafter Luton can manage up to 107 miles on one charge which, for a large payload vehicle, is extremely impressive. What’s more, you’ll be able to charge it from 0% to 80% in under 45 minutes if you use one of the many fast chargers around the country.
In terms of power, the Movano-e Luton really is a great option. The electric motor inside the van produces a staggering 122bhp and 260 Nm of torque. So, this van certainly has enough power to get you from A to B.
Interior
As you might expect from a modern electric van both of these interiors are extremely impressive. They seamlessly mix practicality with a sleek design and make the space feel both comfortable and functional. With a van, this is incredibly difficult to achieve as they must be both workhorses and nice places for long commutes. So, is there anything in this field that sets the two vehicles apart?
In terms of the crafter, this van has a slightly higher quality feel to it. The seats and dashboard seem to be made from a more long-lasting premium material and the seats are a touch more ergonomic. However, the Movano has more storage capacity within the cab so you can keep your valuables safe if you leave the van for a long period of time. Essentially, this will come down to what you use the van for. If you’re a delivery driver, then you’ll probably lean on the side of the Movano for its storage capabilities. Whereas for long commuters the Crafter is likely the van for you.
The Verdict
As you might expect both these vans have incredibly good statistics when it comes to running costs. They are both completely free to tax on the road up until 2025 when the government will start charging electric vehicles. However, charges such as fuel, ultra-low emission zones, and congestion fees will also be almost entirely free for both of these vans. The only time you’ll ever need to spend some money is when you take to the garage for a check-up or charge it up and home.
Both these vans are in fact very similar. Their payload and running costs are both almost identical so the two things you’ll have to consider are the power and the interior. If you’re a long commuter and often find yourself crunching through some motorway miles, then we would recommend the E-Crafter Luton, though if you’re a city driver and often nip between jobs the Movano-e is the van for you.
