Vauxhall Movano-e Electric Van Review

The Vauxhall Movano-e Van at a glance

Vauxhall now has a full range of equivalent electric vans to their combustion models thanks to the introduction of the Movano-e van. Though the original Movano range was only launched relatively recently in comparison to some other popular vans on the market (in 2010), it has established itself as a reliable contender amongst its rivals, and the Movano-e doesn’t disappoint, either.

With three sizes of panel van available (L2, L3 and L4) as well as a chassis cab for other body variants, such as tippers , lutons and dropside vans, there are plenty of options available to tailor the Movano-e to your specific requirements.

The Vauxhall Movano-e is a version of the same van as the Citroen e-Relay and the Peugeot e-Boxer, all of which are third party electric conversions. Despite this, there are some particular features that Vauxhall offers, such as a range of key safety features, including forward collision alert, blind spot warning, lane departure warning and hill descent control (depending on which trim you opt for).

Engines and Spec

Featuring a 90kW motor (reaching speeds of up to 75mph with 122hp and 260Nm of instant torque) powered by a 75kWh battery (the larger battery size out of the two options the Citroen and Peugeot variants have), the Vauxhall Movano-e has a driving range of 154 miles per charge – higher than the daily average mileage in urban areas, meaning you will have plenty of power to complete your daily activities without needing to worry about stopping at a charging station.

Should you need to charge the Movano-e whilst you are out, it can go from 0-80% in as little as an hour using a 50kWh public fast charger, while the common 7kWh wallbox you’ll likely have installed at home will charge your vehicle in six to twelve hours, making it ideal to charge overnight ready for your day ahead.

The smallest size panel van has a reasonable payload of 710kg, which, though lower than that of some rival electric vans, makes it ideal for delivery drivers and tradesmen in urban areas (the electric transmission performs excellently in stop-start traffic), rather than those who rely on their van to transport heavy loads over longer distances.

Despite a slightly limited payload, there is no compromise on loading capacity compared to the diesel version of the Movano, thanks to the lithium battery pack being located under the floor away from the load area.

Interior

The cabin area of the Vauxhall Movano-e is comfortably spacious, with the gear selector not being in stick form, rather you simply need to push a button (Drive, Neutral or Reverse) in order to choose your driving mode.

The 5” touchscreen infotainment display has a built-in navigation system, which shows traffic information in real time for driver convenience. Like the rest of the Movano range, the Vauxhall Movano-e comes with Vauxhall Connect, featuring e-Call and b-Call technology to put drivers in touch with a trained advisor in the event of an emergency or breakdown with just the touch of a button.

Perhaps the only inconvenience inside is the electric vehicle data monitoring display; rather than being displayed in the instrument cluster (whereby the needles on the dials for everything other than your speed have been removed instead of redesigned), the Movano-e’s charge level, driving mode and range are all displayed within the rear-view mirror, which itself is redundant being in a panel van. However, this is still within accessible eyesight when driving.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Ideal for urban traffic and stop-start journeys.

  • Sufficient range to complete daily journeys based on average daily distance covered in urban areas.

  • Quiet and comfortable to drive.

Cons

  • Lower payload than rival electric vans.

  • Vehicle performance display could be more conveniently located.

  • Expensive to buy outright, though more cost-effective on financing.

The Verdict

If you’re in the market for a van that is both environmentally conscious and still performs well in urban areas where stop-start traffic is a common occurrence, then the Vauxhall Movano-e fits the bill. With zero tail emissions, this electric van has little environmental impact and allows you to drive in quiet comfort thanks to the reduced noise pollution, also, when compared to combustion powered vans.

The Vauxhall Movano-e makes an ideal van for delivery drivers and tradesmen located in urban areas who make regular stops along their journeys, and require a large loading space to transport non-heavy goods, tools and materials.

"Staff here are so courteous & helpful, genuine in how they talk rather than that dreaded ‘business speak’. Reception and offices are modern & relaxing to be in, very cool music in background too! Some place just give you the basics - but I found Vanaways completely charming throughout, really appreciated thank you."
