Vauxhall Vivaro-e Hydrogen Set For UK Release in 2023

Voted What Car? Van of the Year 2021, the first commercially available hydrogen propulsion vehicle, the Vauxhall Vivaro-e Hydrogen is the latest addition to their commercial van line-up and aims to lead zero-emission commercial vans across Britain and Europe.

Currently unavailable in right-hand drive, and not expected to arrive in the UK until 2023, the Vauxhall Vivaro-e Hydrogen is in line for left-hand drive purchase from partner-company Opel at the end of this year. Planning is in place with UK fleet operators, and it’s hoped the Vauxhall Vivaro-e Hydrogen will reach our shores sooner than expected. So, here’s what you need to know.

Vauxhall Vivaro-e Hydrogen Specifications

Vauxhall’s zero-emission Vivaro-e Hydrogen commercial vehicle has a maximum range of 205 miles, refuelling in under three minutes, while the 10.5kWh lithium-ion battery provides dynamic peak power whenever required. The battery will also enable regenerative braking, whilst the plug-in capability offers the opportunity to recharge your battery at an external charging station if required.

Below are some of the key specifications for the all-electric Vauxhall Vivaro-e Hydrogen van:

  • Price: From £27,028
  • Range: 143-205 miles
  • CO2 Emissions: 0g/km
  • Load Space: 5.3-6.1m³
  • Payload: 1002-1226kg
  • Power: 136bhp
  • Torque: 192lb-ft

Marrying a 45kW fuel cell, capable of generating enough power for continuous motorway driving, with three 700bar hydrogen tanks, the Vauxhall Vivaro-e Hydrogen uses the same front-mounted 134bhp electric motor as the current Vivaro-e BEV model. Retaining the same body size as the existing Vivaro models, with the option for either a standard 4.95 metre or longer 5.3-metre wheelbase, and an increased payload capacity of 1100kg, space and size is not compromised in favour of fuel efficiency, with the standard 6.1 cubic metre cargo volume capacity also remaining the same.

How Do Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles Work Using Hydrogen?

As with any EV, fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), use electricity to power an electric motor. However, unlike most EVs, FCEVs electric current is produced using a fuel cell-powered by hydrogen, as opposed to drawing electricity purely from the battery. The amount of energy stored on board is determined by the size of the hydrogen fuel tank, in contrast with standard all-electric vehicles, where the amount of power is directly related to the size of the battery. FCEVs typically use braking energy to further power and charge the battery during short acceleration.

"First class service, I must mention Adrian & Ash on an excellent deal & swift turn around under the short notice I had to buying a new van. Slight delay in the delivery of the van from manufacturers end but Adrian agreed to cover the cost of a hire van until my new van was delivered which allowed me to continue working. its the first time i've purchased a van without physically entering a dealership and i wouldn't hesitate to do it again."
