Volkswagen Crafter Tipper Review

Whether you work in landscaping, construction or groundworks, a tipper van is the type of van for you. If you’re looking for one that works as hard as you do and helps you work efficiently, then you should consider the Volkswagen Crafter Tipper.

Available in a single or double cab, with front or rear wheel drive, the Crafter Tipper has an impressive payload and high-strength steel platform that will make light work of your heavy loads. Made by conversion specialists Ingimex, you can rest assured that this tipper is designed to the highest standard.

On top of this, the Crafter van itself is one of the most reliable and comfortable vans to drive with a relatively modern interior and ample storage space.

If the Volkswagen Crafter Tipper sounds like a good fit for you and you’d like to learn more, then read on below as we discuss how well it would suit you as a working van.

Engines and Spec

The Crafter Tipper comes with a 2.0-litre diesel engine that is available in either front or rear wheel drive and the option for a 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic gearbox.

There are two different engines that you can opt for depending on your requirements for power, with the 140PS engine delivering an impressive 340 Nm of torque, whilst the more powerful 177PS engine offers even more with 410 Nm of torque, which is worth considering depending on where you live and the route you take to work, as well as what the traffic situation is often like.

Not only is this power and acceleration ideal for keeping up with busy, fast-paced traffic, but it means you can easily accelerate and manage long journeys with a full tipper load in the back.

Whether you travel along quiet roads in rural areas where the national speed limit is in place or regularly take dual carriage way and/or motorway journeys, the Crafter won’t hold you back, with a max speed of 91-93mph. This is a key benefit considering some vans are limited to much lower speeds.

Interior

As we’ve already mentioned, Volkswagen have teamed up with Ingimex to create the tipper body of their Crafter Tipper. There is a generous loading space of 3,350mm by 2,026mm that is ideal for transporting loose materials; what’s more, this space is not impeded on by the double cab version of the Crafter Tipper, meaning you can utilise the maximum amount of space available regardless of whether you need room for additional colleagues or not.

As for the payload, you can expect to hold between 772-1,081kg (depending on which cab option you opt for). This is sufficient at holding heavy loads of either loose or bagged materials, such as soil, aggregates or sand, as well as any additional equipment, making it perfect for carrying out your job effectively and efficiently.

The tipper function is controlled via wander lead and the tailboard comes with the option for tip-over and tip-through functionality, depending on both your preference and what is the most practical for what you’re unloading. To secure loads whilst in transit, there are six internal load lashing points on the deck, which are ideal for securing bagged materials that can easily be loaded and unloaded thanks to the inclusion of dropside sideboards.

Moving on to the cabin area, practicality is at a premium thanks to the ample storage spaces both in the upper and lower dashboard, along with a generously spaced glovebox and large door compartments (ideal for keeping important documents and large water bottles that are much needed for physically intensive outside jobs), while the narrow ‘A’ pillars offer improved all-round vision when driving.

The gear stick has also been placed rather high up, being located just underneath the centre of the dash, making it much easier and more comfortable to reach from the steering wheel when driving, as well as having the added benefit of offering more leg space to any colleagues who sit in the middle of the dual passenger bench.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Generous loading space that remains the same for both single and double cabs.
  • Decent payload and high torque for managing heavy loads at higher speeds.
  • Dropside boards included as well as tipper function with tailboard.

Cons

  • Fuel economy could be improved.
  • Though storage space in the cab is ample, there is a lack of covered storage.

The Verdict

If you work individually or as part of a team and require a tipper van to get you from A to B whilst transporting loads of materials both on and between working sites, then we highly recommend the Volkswagen Crafter Tipper to you. Practical for completing the ins and outs of your daily tasks while offering driving comfort on longer journeys, it is a versatile and reliable van that construction workers and landscapers alike would benefit from.

The price was very competitive and all parts of the transaction were easy and hassle free, wouldn't hesitate to recommend these guys, Thank you so much for a really good experience."

"Paige was outstanding in her responsiveness to what presented as a serious problem for our company. The finance company used by her company caused unnecessary and significant delays in the delivery of our van - the pain of which was mitigated somewhat by Paige's proactive communication, informative and realistic communication and very professional demeanour. I'd recommend her and she meant our view of Vanaways was overall positive."
