What are UK Speed Limits for Electric Vans?

Van speed limits are often lower than that of cars, despite this though there are a few exceptions.

Speed limits of the United Kingdom vary in lots of different ways. Not to mention this, they are more often than not an area of much controversy for lots of drivers, with speed limits frequently being debated. Nevertheless, the rules are the rules and are certainly something to be abided by.

But what are the speed limits if you drive a van? Unfortunately, the answer isn’t a one-size-fits-all scenario, because it varies according to what type of van, camper or another commercial type of van you’re driving, the road that you’re on, and whether you’re towing. With this in mind, here we explore the speeding limitations and offer a general overview of the rules of the UK roads for van drivers.

UK Van Speed Limits

Naturally, the UK speed limit varies from area to area. For electric vans it is as follows:

  • Built-up areas: 30mph
  • Single carriageways: 50mph
  • Dual carriageways: 60mph
  • Motorways: 70mph

In the case of single and dual carriageways, the speed limit for vans is 10mph less than the posted limit for a car. What’s more, if you’re driving a van and towing then the motorway limit is also set at 60mph.

Of course, these are standardised limits, but local authorities can set limits as they see fit, so do remember to keep an eye on speed limit signs. Luckily, lots of vans come with the option of road sign recognition, making it much simpler for you to stay on the right side of the law.

Will the UK Speed Limit Increase Due to Electric Vans?

One of the key restrictions relating to increasing the speed limit on motorways is the amount of pollution that would be created.

Vans will create higher levels of CO2 when driving at quicker speeds. A reduction in these emissions due to more EVs would lessen the environmental impact of an increased speed.

This said electric vans are no more harmful to the environment than petrol-fueled vans.

"First class service, I must mention Adrian & Ash on an excellent deal & swift turn around under the short notice I had to buying a new van. Slight delay in the delivery of the van from manufacturers end but Adrian agreed to cover the cost of a hire van until my new van was delivered which allowed me to continue working. its the first time i've purchased a van without physically entering a dealership and i wouldn't hesitate to do it again."
