Citroen E-Relay Tipper vs Ford E-Transit Tipper

A tipper is a versatile and practical light commercial vehicle, commonly used for transporting and unloading loose materials such as sand, gravel, dirt, or construction waste. The truck is equipped with a hydraulic system that lifts (or tips) the front end of the cargo bed, allowing the contents to be deposited onto the ground or into a receptacle. Able to haul and unload a variety of materials with ease, tipper vans are an astute choice of van variant for a litany of commercial needs.

If you’re interested in a Tipper van variant, it makes an increasing amount of sense for it to be electric. Having a sustainably-powered vehicle will not only impress clients and competitors alike, but it will also save you money in the long run. Considering the current cost of fuel and the complications of European emission regulations, having an electric van can make life easier and cheaper for commercial use.

The Citroen E-Relay and Ford E-Transit are two electric versions of popular van models and are both available in the Tipper variation. This blog is going to compare the Citroen E-Relay Tipper and Ford E-Transit Tipper in an effort to find out more about each vehicle and help you see which van can best meet your commercial needs. Read on to learn more about these two excellent vans, both available at Vanaways.

Engines and Spec

The Citroen E-Relay Tipper is powered by an electric motor that produces 121 horsepower and 260 Nm of torque, making it feel responsive and nippy in acceleration. The van is available with either a 37 kWh or 70 kWh battery which results in a battery range of up to 73 or 139 miles on a single charge. The charging time for the battery is around 5.5 hours for the smaller battery, and up to 11 hours for the larger one. There is impressive versatility in the options available in battery size and range.

On the other hand, the Ford E-Transit Tipper is powered by a 67 kWh battery and an electric motor that delivers 198 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. With an estimated range of 126 miles on a single charge, the E-Transit deftly combines power with endurance, a factor that many other vans struggle to balance. The Ford can be recharged using a standard 240-volt outlet, but it also supports DC fast charging, which can deliver up to 80% charge in just 45 minutes.

In terms of payload capacity, whilst the E-Relay’s maximum payload of 1,150kg is less than the E-Transit’s 1,616 kg, both vans are comfortable with carrying heavy materials – an essential requirement for a Tipper. If you’re looking for a bit more flexibility in payload performance, the Ford might be preferable.

Interior

The interior of the Citroen E-Relay Tipper includes a 5-inch colour touchscreen display, rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, and electrically adjustable heated mirrors. It also has a range of safety features, including lane departure warning, a speed limiter, and hill-start assist.  The Tipper mechanism is operated by a control panel mounted in the cab, which allows the driver to raise and lower the bed of the vehicle with ease.

The Ford E-Transit’s interior is slightly more advanced than that of the Citroen. It includes features such as Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning, and Blind Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert. The vehicle also includes a 12-inch touchscreen display, an available FordPass Connect modem with 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, and a suite of driver assistance features, including Adaptive Cruise Control, Intelligent Speed Assist, and Pro Trailer Backup Assist.

The steel floor and sides of each cargo area can withstand heavy use and are spacious, with the Citroen and Ford each having a load volume of 10m³ and 9.5m³ respectively. The interior and build quality of both vans make them especially suitable for use as a Tipper.

The Verdict

Overall, both the Citroen E-Relay Tipper and Ford E-Transit Tipper are two great electric vehicles with versatility in their potential commercial uses. Both vans are powerful, have a long-lasting battery range, and are packed with useful additional features that suit them as a Tipper variant. For some, the E-Transit’s extra payload and more advanced safety features will make it preferable to the E-Relay’s focus on practicality and function.

"First class service, I must mention Adrian & Ash on an excellent deal & swift turn around under the short notice I had to buying a new van. Slight delay in the delivery of the van from manufacturers end but Adrian agreed to cover the cost of a hire van until my new van was delivered which allowed me to continue working. its the first time i've purchased a van without physically entering a dealership and i wouldn't hesitate to do it again."
