Citroen E-Relay Luton vs Mercedes-Benz eSprinter Luton

In the past ten or so years, electric vehicle technology has begun to dominate the market, as individuals and businesses make the most of the developments in technology to get their hands on amazing vehicles with excellent performances that rival their diesel counterparts.

Electric vehicles are great for the environment, as their engines do not produce harmful emissions and do not add to noise pollution. They are also great for business image and are helpful in allowing a driver to enter clean air zones without worrying about charges.

Vanaways has a great selection of electric vehicles for sale, in a variety of makes, models and body types. There is so much choice out there, so this article will compare two of our favourites, the Citroen E-Relay Luton and the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter Luton.

The Citroen Relay was first released in 1994 in the United Kingdom, with the electric version hitting the market in 2020. The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter has been a popular light commercial vehicle since its first year of production in 1995. After numerous generations and facelifts, the first eSprinter was announced in 2018.

Read on to find out a bit more about each van.

Engines and Spec

In terms of the engine, the Citroen e-Relay Luton has a 75 kWh battery which gives a generous range of around 150 miles on a full charge. The main benefit of a Luton van is the large payload and cargo capacity it has, as well as the unique storage space above the cab which gives a Luton its distinct shape. The Luton model of the Citroen e-Relay has an L3 and an L4 model, referring to the length.

The L3 model has an internal width, length and height of 2057 mm by 3480 mm by 2235 mm and the L4 model is 2057 mm by 4150 mm by 2390 mm. This gives the L3 a payload of around 1147kg and the L4 979 kg. This is an ideal payload for an electric Luton van and you can also have an optional tail lift on the back for easier loading and unloading.

The Mercedes eSprinter is equipped with one of two batteries that produce an output of 85 kW and 295 Nm. It has an estimated range of between 71 and 104 miles on a full charge, depending on which battery option you go with. The electric motor is capable of producing incredible torque, so can easily get a large van going with a large payload in the back. For more on the eSprinter, check out our full review here.

Interior

The Mercedes eSprinter Luton has a beautifully modern interior, full of easy-to-access storage spaces and a smart design that makes it a very comfortable ride. It has a robust and practical design, much better suited for jobs where the van needs to go through a lot of wear and tear. So if you’re thinking about a van that might impress a client, this van may not be the one to go for, but it is perfect for practical uses.

The Citroen e-Relay has a similar interior to the diesel version, with a spacious cabin that has plenty of storage spaces and room for two passengers along with the driver. As it is an electric van, the gear stick has been removed and replaced with simple buttons to switch your drive mode with ease. All of the necessary electric information is displayed on the interior mirror. So you can easily glance up and see your battery level, your range and the current driving mode.

In the back you can expect locking strips and tie rails, so you can easily and safely secure your cargo while travelling. For more on the e-Relay, read our full review.

"First class service, I must mention Adrian & Ash on an excellent deal & swift turn around under the short notice I had to buying a new van. Slight delay in the delivery of the van from manufacturers end but Adrian agreed to cover the cost of a hire van until my new van was delivered which allowed me to continue working. its the first time i've purchased a van without physically entering a dealership and i wouldn't hesitate to do it again."
