Electric Vs. Fuel: Which Performs Better?

A little over ten years ago, this wouldn’t have even been a question you were asking yourself. These days, however, almost every vehicle company has invested in alternative fuel, and the number of benefits of electric vehicles are starting to outweigh those that are petrol-powered.

But are these newer technologies the right choice for everyone? This guide will outline the advantages and pitfalls of electric and fuel-powered vehicles to help you make the right decision.

What are the differences?

  • Fuel Vehicle: A fuel-powered vehicle is one that runs on a spark-ignited internal combustion and requires frequent fuel top-ups. By contrast, a vehicle powered by diesel uses a compression-ignited system.
  • Electric Vehicle (EV): Like the name suggests, these vehicles run entirely on electricity, which is stored in its onboard batteries and is recharged via a cable. They are otherwise known as Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs).

Electric Vehicles

Advantages

  • Environmentally friendly: An electric vehicle is most definitely the best choice for helping to tackle climate change. This is because they produce virtually no emissions.
  • Cost-efficient: Electric vehicles are far cheaper to run than those that are fuel-powered. The lack of need for petrol, as well as the fact that electricity costs much less, makes it a great cost-efficient alternative. On top of this, since EVs don’t require as much maintenance (there are fewer moving parts), you’ll find yourself spending far less on routine repairs.
  • Charge anywhere: As well as being able to charge your electric vehicle from your home or workplace, there are an abundance of public EV charging points all over the UK these days, and they’re extremely easy to find.

Disadvantages

  • More expensive to buy: Although you make up for it in reduced running and maintenance costs, EVs are ultimately more expensive to buy.
  • Slower performance: Because of their instant acceleration, electric vehicles are quicker to start. Overall, however, they still aren’t as fast as some fuel vehicles.

Fuel Vehicles

Advantages

  • Cheaper to buy: Since fuel-powered vehicles have been around for much longer, they are cheaper to buy or lease than EVs.
  • Faster: Generally, fuel vehicles can reach higher speeds.
  • Convenient top-up: While you can find EV charging points relatively easily, petrol stations are ultimately more common, and you’ll never have to go out of your way to find one.

Disadvantages

  • Expensive to run and maintain: One of the biggest disadvantages of owning a fuel-powered vehicle is just how much money you have to put into them. Petrol isn’t cheap, and with more moving parts to worry about, refuelling and servicing them regularly can get pretty costly.
  • Not sustainable: The predominant reason that companies set out to manufacture electric vehicles is because of the detrimental effects of CO2 emissions on the environment. Fuel-powered vehicles are absolutely not a sustainable option due to the polluting exhaust pipe emissions they produce.

"First class service, I must mention Adrian & Ash on an excellent deal & swift turn around under the short notice I had to buying a new van. Slight delay in the delivery of the van from manufacturers end but Adrian agreed to cover the cost of a hire van until my new van was delivered which allowed me to continue working. its the first time i've purchased a van without physically entering a dealership and i wouldn't hesitate to do it again."
