Ford E-Transit Luton vs Maxus e-Deliver 9 Luton

With all of the extra space that they offer, Luton vans are an excellent choice for companies looking to transport a large volume of goods around, such as delivery drivers, removal companies and construction workers. Naturally, powering such a large vehicle can be costly as it is, but this is especially true due to the recent spike in energy prices. Fortunately, in order to remain compliant with  updated emissions regulations, many mainstream van manufacturers have now released electric variants of their most popular Luton models. Two great examples of this are the Ford e-Transit Luton and the Maxus e-Deliver 9 Luton.

However, the push for more carbon neutral options in the commercial van sector means that there are now countless electric vans to choose from. Whilst this is ultimately a positive step forward for the environment, it can nonetheless be difficult to decide which Luton van would be best suited to your specific requirements. Although both of the vans discussed in this review have a lot to offer, it’s important to know all of the key differences between them to help you make an informed decision. Read on to find out more about the peaks and pitfalls of each of these electric vehicles.

Engines and Spec

The design of a Luton van consists of a box-shaped body that extends over the driver cab; the portion that rests atop the cab is referred to as the Luton. Because of their wide expanse of load space, the Luton van is known for its generous payload capacity. Fortunately, the electric vans discussed in this article both have their running gear located beneath the floor, meaning that their load spaces don’t differ from that of their diesel counterparts. As a result, both vans boast a payload of over 1 tonne – a generous figure for two large electric vehicles.

Taking a look underneath the bonnet of the e-Transit Luton first, the motor is powered by a 68kWh battery which can produce up to 430Nm of torque. All of this amounts to an impressive maximum driving range of 157 miles. When plugged into a rapid DC charger, the e-Transit can go from 15% to 80% in 34 minutes, whereas it will take 11.5 hours to reach a full charge when using a 7.4kW AC wall charger.

Moving onto the e-Deliver 9 Luton, drivers are presented with a choice of 51.5, 72 or 88.5kWh batteries – the largest of which can achieve an incredible 200 mile driving range, subject to road conditions and driving efficiency. Similar to the e-Transit, rapid DC charging can get you up to 80% in just 40 minutes.

Interior

Inside the cabin of each van, you will find a modern and well thought out interior. Looking first at the e-Transit Luton, one of the most notable features is the 12” touchscreen infotainment display on the centre console, which is kitted out with smartphone connectivity and SYNC 4. It also includes satellite navigation which tells you where the closest EV charging stations are. The only real downside to this cabin is that there is only one passenger seat.

One thing that really stands out about the e-Deliver 9 Luton’s cab is how comfortable and spacious it is – ideal for drivers who like that little bit of extra room. The driver’s seat is conveniently adjustable, and there are plenty of storage options for you to stash everything you need for a day on the job. There are also a number of handy safety features, including a multi-functional steering wheel, automatic emergency braking and a high-tech anti-theft security system.

The Verdict

Although both the Ford e-Transit Luton and Maxus e-Deliver 9 Luton are both abundant with great features, the choice of which van to buy will ultimately come down to your preferences and the requirements of your business. At the very least, regardless of which you choose, you can rest assured that you are choosing an environmentally-friendly, zero-emissions dropside van that will save you money on running costs and also reduce your carbon footprint.

"First class service, I must mention Adrian & Ash on an excellent deal & swift turn around under the short notice I had to buying a new van. Slight delay in the delivery of the van from manufacturers end but Adrian agreed to cover the cost of a hire van until my new van was delivered which allowed me to continue working. its the first time i've purchased a van without physically entering a dealership and i wouldn't hesitate to do it again."
