How To Tax Your New Van

It’s always an exciting time when you have just bought a new van for yourself or for your business. You’ll be thinking about the endless new applications and features that you want to try out. But before you do all this, there are some things you need to do. This includes taxing your new van and ensuring it is registered properly with the DVLA.

Here is a guide to taxing your new vehicle from the team at Van Sales UK.

Tax Your Transit Van

Car tax must be paid for every car that is registered in the UK regardless of whether it is driven regularly or parked up unused.  The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) are in charge of car tax, so your vehicle must be registered and licensed with them. The DVLA keeps a database of the registration and licensing status of every single vehicle and driver on the roads, so will know if tax has not been paid or if somebody is driving without a licence.

You can get your vehicle taxed easily via the gov.uk website.  You will need a reference number that you can find in a few different places. The first is from a recent reminder from the DVLA to tax your vehicle. You can also find it in your vehicle log book or the green ‘new keeper’ slip from a log book. If you have none of these, you’ll have to apply for a new log book to obtain one.

There are different tax rates for different vehicles. Cars registered on or after the 1st April 2017 have to pay tax when the vehicle is first registered and then pay vehicle tax every 6 or 12 months. The rate you pay will depend on the vehicle’s C02 emissions. Cars registered between 1st March 2001 and 31st March 2017 have their rate calculated based on fuel type and C02 emissions. Vehicles before this have their rate based on engine size.

It is a legal requirement to tax your vehicle, even if you are exempt from paying this tax. This includes if the vehicle is used by a disabled person, transports disabled people, is a historic, steam or electric vehicle, is a mobility scooter or powered wheelchair. This exemption also applies to vehicles used for agriculture, horticulture and forestry.

The price was very competitive and all parts of the transaction were easy and hassle free, wouldn't hesitate to recommend these guys, Thank you so much for a really good experience."

"Paige was outstanding in her responsiveness to what presented as a serious problem for our company. The finance company used by her company caused unnecessary and significant delays in the delivery of our van - the pain of which was mitigated somewhat by Paige's proactive communication, informative and realistic communication and very professional demeanour. I'd recommend her and she meant our view of Vanaways was overall positive."
