Luton: Fiat E-Ducato vs Peugeot e-Boxer

If you’re researching for your next van purchase, then you may wish to weigh up the options currently on offer from two of the most well-known automotive manufacturing brands on the market right now. The Fiat E-Ducato and the Peugeot e-Boxer are two low-emission vehicle options with a range of exciting and practical features. Both feature standardised electric engines and plentiful interior storage.

Many car manufacturers are reflecting on their carbon footprint and investing in the production of low or zero-emission vehicles. As such, Fiat and Peugeot have produced electric versions of some of their existing large vans, to provide familiar specifications and interiors combined with a more environmentally friendly fuel source.

This review analyses the various features of two different Luton vans, where this popular van type generally consists of a box-shaped body, designed to transport a variety of goods and products. Read on for a head-to-head breakdown of what these two van options have to offer.

Engines and Spec

Electric vehicles are generally more fuel-efficient and cost-effective than comparable diesel or petrol engines, meaning they’re great for saving you money and saving the planet. These can be easily charged overnight at home charging points or can be topped up on the go at rapid-charge points located at most fuel and service stations.

The Fiat E-Ducato features a 90kW electric motor, which is an industry leader for quiet driving compared to other electric cars. It is available in two battery sizes. The 47kWh version delivers a driving range of up to 108 miles per charge, whilst the 79kWh edition can reach 175 miles. Charging times at a standard rapid-charge station are averaged at 30-60 minutes. The top speed of the lightest edition is capped at 62 mph. This van also comes with a selection of three different driving modes – normal, eco and power, where each is suited to a range of road conditions and speeds. It also includes a further ‘Turtle’ mode which automatically conserves energy when you hit critical charge levels.

In comparison, the Peugeot e-Boxer is also fitted with a 90kW electric motor, which is designed to provide a quiet and smooth drive. There are two battery-size options available for this van too. The 37kWh battery can allow your vehicle to run for up to 73 miles per charge, whilst the larger 75kWh battery unit reaches a maximum of 154 miles. Charging times at a rapid-charge station average at 60 minutes to reach 80% charge. This vehicle’s top speed is capped at around 68 mph for the lightest version.

Interior

The Fiat E-Ducato has an interior modelled on the non-electric version of the same vehicle, but with an increased focus on practicality rather than excess comfort. It is perfect for long-haul usage with lots of storage compartments built into the cab area.

This van allows you to choose between two trim options – standard and the more complex eTecnico. Both of these options include a touchscreen, where the eTecnico option has a slightly large screen width as well as a rear-view camera. The standard model also includes an LED-lit loading area, as well as automatic climate control and a tablet holder.

In contrast, the Peugeot e-Boxer van is also modelled on the original less fuel-efficient model, with similar interior design elements. Like the Fiat, there are plenty of storage capabilities designed to maximise your driving comfort.

This Peugeot van also features a built-in touchscreen that is complete with a navigation system as well as technology that estimates battery charge levels and remaining drive times. It also includes handy interior mirror view features for better driving, as well as parking sensors and Bluetooth connectivity.

The Verdict

Both of these van options provide practical and reliable driving experiences that are fuel efficient and environmentally friendly. The Fiat E-Ducato model brings with it an option of trim designs, as well as an impressive driving range, but it is not as powerful as some of the other electric vehicles on the market.

In comparison, the Peugeot e-Boxer provides a quiet, zero-emissions driving experience, and is cheaper to run than the diesel edition of the same model. Its drawbacks include a less impressive interior set-up than the Fiat option. This van also only provides a basic range of safety equipment, whilst the Fiat is fitted with traffic sign recognition and advanced emergency braking. Both models also present high outright buying costs, despite having fuel-efficient engines that will save you money in the long run.

"First class service, I must mention Adrian & Ash on an excellent deal & swift turn around under the short notice I had to buying a new van. Slight delay in the delivery of the van from manufacturers end but Adrian agreed to cover the cost of a hire van until my new van was delivered which allowed me to continue working. its the first time i've purchased a van without physically entering a dealership and i wouldn't hesitate to do it again."
