MAN eTGE Dropside vs Volkswagen e-Transporter Dropside

Whether you’re a labourer, landscaper, removal specialist or fleet manager, the vehicle you drive is more than a means of getting from A to B. Commercial vans are a means of improving storage, security, material transport, branding and efficiency. Often, a good commercial vehicle feels a little like another member of the team.

That said, nothing lasts forever and when a vehicle reaches the end of its working life, it’s important to invest in a replacement that lives up to the legacy. No two businesses are the same, and your requirements will be dependent on the specific nature of your work. For sole traders and businesses, practicality, comfort and efficiency are often priorities, but is this too much to ask from one van? You’ll be pleased to know that the answer is a resounding no.

As technology and engineering advances, electric vans have become the norm for businesses across the world. From small start-ups to international corporations, battery-powered vehicles present a wide range of benefits. Not only do they offer the practical benefits of traditional diesel vans, but they are also a sustainable method of transportation. With many businesses turning their focus towards renewable existences, an all-electric work vehicle is a brilliant choice.

If you’re on the lookout for an all-electric dropside van, you’ve come to the right place. Here at Vanaways, we’ve placed two great vehicles head-to-head to find out which is best. Read on to discover our van vs van review of the MAN eTGE Dropside and the Volkswagen e-Transporter Dropside.

Engines and Spec

Before we check out cosmetic characteristics such as cabs and interiors, let’s take a look at the driving forces behind each vehicle. While both the MAN eTGE Dropside and the Volkswagen e-Transporter Dropside boast lithium-ion technology, their outputs and drivetrains differ.

We’ll kick things off with the MAN eTGE Dropside. As you may have guessed, this is the all-electric version of the much-loved TGE, a range that first hit the roads in 1999. This impressive van is powered by a highly efficient 36kWh lithium-ion battery, offering about 110km of range on a single charge. Although this may not be the perfect choice for those driving long distances, it provides an ideal solution for cities and towns. What’s more, MAN guarantees the proper functioning of the high-voltage battery for 8 years!

As well as all that emission-free mileage, the MAN eTGE Dropside also impressed us in terms of horsepower. The mighty electric motor produces 100kW of power and 290Nm of instant torque! That’s more than enough for full loads and tough hills.

In terms of payload and dropside functionality, the MAN eTGE offers plenty, especially for an electric vehicle. The lightweight aluminium body measures 3,255 x 2,040 x 300 mm; that’s more than enough space for bulky equipment, materials and debris.

There’s no denying that the MAN eTGE Dropside is a tough act to follow, so let’s find out how the Volkswagen e-Transporter Dropside compares.

In terms of power output, the Volkswagen e-Transporter Dropside is fitted with an 83kW (110bhp) electric motor and a 37.3kWh battery. This setup offers a range of 132 km on a full charge, more than the MAN eTGE, but not quite enough for cross-country driving either.

When it comes to charging the e-Transporter, individuals are faced with a few options. For super fast charging,  DC technology means it can reach 80% in just 45 minutes. This is ideal for longer journeys, allowing you to stop, grab a coffee and be back on the road in no time.

Interior

Stepping inside the cabs of these vans, both drivers and passengers will be greeted by high-quality finishes, practical layouts and a host of tech features.

The MAN eTGE boasts a sleek, well-designed interior, perfect for those looking to spend a decent amount of time behind the wheel. As far as commercial vans are concerned, this is top-class. There’s an abundance of storage including handy secure lockers for tools, money and valuables while out on a job. Of course, the eTGE is kitted out with all the technology you’d expect, including a multifunctional screen which can operate as a media player or navigation system.

As expected, the Volkswagen e-Transported features an equally impressive cab layout. With a sleek, modern cabin as well as plenty of room for passengers, there is no denying that this is a top-of-the-range electric vehicle.

In terms of tech, the centre console is home to USB charging points, 12v sockets, and a 6.5-inch infotainment system equipped with Bluetooth, DAB radio and USB-C connectivity.

The Verdict

We’re sure you’ve guessed it, but there is no certain answer to the question ‘which van is better?’. Both the MAN eTGE Dropside and the Volkswagen e-Transporter Dropside present a range of admirable features, including plenty of storage, practical dropside chassis and a plethora of tech.

If you’re unsure which van would suit your business best, don’t hesitate to get in touch. Here at Vanaways, we’re always happy to point customers in the right direction.

"Paige was outstanding in her responsiveness to what presented as a serious problem for our company. The finance company used by her company caused unnecessary and significant delays in the delivery of our van - the pain of which was mitigated somewhat by Paige's proactive communication, informative and realistic communication and very professional demeanour. I'd recommend her and she meant our view of Vanaways was overall positive."
