Peugeot have been one of the leading manufacturers in producing an electric version of their van models, thanks to the help of conversion specialist BEDEO. The e-Boxer was the last of their models to be converted, and, now that it has, you can get an electric version of each Boxer body type, including the Boxer Tipper – known respectively as the e-Boxer Tipper.
If you’re wondering how well the e-Boxer Tipper performs against the more established diesel Boxer Tipper, both in driving performance and functionality as a tipper van, you’ve come to the right place. We’ll be comparing the qualities and setbacks of each, allowing you to make an informed decision on whether it will be more cost-effective and practical for your needs to stick to the reliable diesel model or the more environmentally friendly electric version.
Engines and Spec
When it comes to driving performance, one of the first questions you will likely be asking is ‘what is the driving range of the Peugeot e-Boxer Tipper?’, as is often the question on most people’s minds when it comes to electric vehicles. One of the great things about the e-Boxer is that it comes with two battery pack options depending on which size van you get, the smaller 37kWh battery allows the van to cover 73 miles on a full charge, whilst the 75kWh can manage 154 miles, which is impressive for an electric vehicle.
The option between the two allows you to choose the most economical and best-suited battery in relation to the routes you typically drive, with the smaller battery being ideal for those who exclusively use their tipper van to transport materials across a construction site throughout the day (as well as their journey to and from work), whilst the larger battery comfortably covers longer distances for those that perhaps make more frequent journeys between places.
However, if you need your van for motorway driving or even longer journeys, then it is worth noting that the Boxer Tipper will easily cover much larger distances. Possessing a 2.2-litre diesel engine, the Boxer is great for long distance or cross country trips, travelling at least four times further than the electric version before needing to fuel up. This also makes it more proficient at carrying heavier loads whilst driving, since it boasts a torque of 310Nm where the e-Boxer only has 260Nm of torque.
Although this makes motorway driving feel much easier with heavier loads, the Boxer Tipper is subsequently loud to drive, as well as rough due to the manual transmission. The e-Boxer tipper, on the other hand, offers a much more comfortable driving experience, being smooth to handle thanks to the automatic transmission (as you can learn about in our in-depth review of the e-Boxer Tipper), as well as quiet to drive.
Interior
If payload is of high importance to you in a tipper van, then you will be glad to know that both the Boxer Tipper and e-Boxer Tipper offer a maximum payload of 1,222kg, so regardless of which van you prefer, you will not have to compromise on efficient loading opportunities if you work in landscaping or construction and frequently use your tipper for the transportation and removal of heavy, loose materials. Since both vans use the Ingimex made tipper body, the loading space of 2026mm by 2087mm is also exclusive to both.
As for the cabin, this remains almost identical between both vans, with some minor alterations in the e-Boxer to accommodate the necessary features reflective of an electric vehicle. The most noticeable difference will be the almost redundant purpose of the instrument cluster, which simply displays your speed while the other dials have had their needles removed and sit there dormant. The necessary information, such as your battery level and remaining achievable range, is instead displayed digitally within the rearview mirror.
This is the result of the e-Boxer being a third-party conversion rather than factory made, and may take some getting used to. It is fair to say that glancing down at the dashboard does seem much easier and more natural, something which remains in the diesel Boxer. This is only a minor inconvenience, however, one to only note when getting into the nit-picky differences.
You will recall that we mentioned how the e-Boxer has automatic transmission rather than the manual transmission of the diesel version. The reason we are mentioning this in regards to the van’s interior is because the gear stick has been removed and replaced with three silver buttons, with the option for Drive, Neutral and Reverse. As well as adding a slight touch of modernity in what is otherwise not perhaps the most modern or stylish interior, this increases space for passengers, namely the leg room available for anyone sitting in the middle seat. This is beneficial if you typically have two colleagues in your van with you.
The Verdict/Snap shot
As far as the Peugeot Boxer performs as a tipper van, both the diesel and electric are equally practical, with abundant space and payload and the tipper function being conveniently controlled by an electric control within the cabin – more information on this can be found in our Peugeot Boxer Tipper review. It is each van’s driving performance where deviations can be identified.
The diesel Boxer is undoubtedly better suited to driving long distance journeys and regular motorway driving, while the e-Boxer’s qualities are best utilised when driving shorter distances. However, when it comes to efficiency, the e-Boxer actually works out cheaper to run. Although it manages a shorter distance before needing to be charged, when comparing fuel efficiency, the mpg equivalent of the e-Boxer works out as almost double that of the Boxer.
