Peugeot e-Boxer Luton vs Renault Master Z.E. Luton

Smooth rides, swanky cab spaces and instant torque aren’t always the first things to spring to mind when we talk about vans. For businesses, tradespeople and delivery drivers, space, practicality and functionality are a top priority, with extra features, modern tech and luxury additions seen as somewhat of a bonus. Yet this needn’t be the case.

Gone are the days of clunky doors, cramped cabs and poor visibility as we welcome the next generation of commercial vehicles. We are, of course, talking about electric vans. Over the last decade, electric vehicles have swarmed the market, providing an eco-friendly alternative to traditional combustion engines. Although large vans and commercial vehicles seemed hard to replace at first, advancements in technology have made this a reality.

Whether you own a business, work as a sole trader or manage a commercial fleet, there comes a time when upgrading your vehicle(s) is a necessity. That said, if space, payload and storage are the characteristics you seek, an all-electric Luton could be an ideal choice.

In this review, we’ve placed two great electric Lutons head to head. Read on to discover our van vs van comparison of the Peugeot e-Boxer Luton and Renault Master Z.E. Luton.

Engines and Spec

Let’s dive right in and check out the engine or, in this case, batteries!

The Peugeot e-Boxer Luton is fitted with a 90kW electric motor and powered by a 75kWh battery pack. This combination is sure to satisfy those looking for a little extra range, offering up to 154 miles on a single charge. Moreover, the low centre of gravity provided by the larger battery gives a real sense of stability and smoothness to the driving experience.

When it comes to charging, the Peugeot e-Boxer can reach 80% battery within an hour if a 50kWh DC rapid charge point is used. With a standard 7.4kWh home charger, however, it will take around 12 hours; this is ideal for overnight charging. The van’s charging socket is conveniently located in the same place as the fuel filler on the diesel equivalent, just behind the passenger door.

In terms of load space, the e-Boxer boasts 20 cubic metres of room, ideal for bulky cargo and stacked goods. What’s more, despite the weight of the battery, this impressive van can handle over a tonne of payload. The e-Boxer Luton is also available with an optional tail-lift, which allows loading and unloading jobs to be carried out with ease.

There’s no denying that the Peugeot e-Boxer Luton is a hard act to follow. So how does the Renault Master Z.E. Luton compare? First things first, the Master Z.E. Luton makes use of an R75 electric motor which packs a real punch with 225 Nm of instant torque. This bit of kit means that the Z.E. Luton is ideal for heavy loads and zippy city manoeuvres. Though the 126 miles of driving range is a little less than the e-Boxer Luton, there is no denying that the Master Z.E. is an incredible choice for city driving and delivery/removal specialists.

As with every electric vehicle, drivers of the Master Z.E. Luton will benefit from tariff-free access to congestion charging zones as well as a drastically reduced carbon footprint.

Interior

Moving inside the cab, each van adopts a practical approach, with sturdy design features alongside a plethora of handy tech.

The Peugeot e-Boxer Luton is a third-party conversion, so may feel a little different to other Peugeot vans and may take a couple of trips to get used to. For example, all of the information regarding electric function, such as the battery charge level and driving range, is digitally displayed via the rearview mirror. As far as in-cab tech is concerned, the e-Boxer does feature a touchscreen infotainment system including Bluetooth and sat-nav. What’s more, the e-Boxer boasts an abundance of storage space, making it perfect for keeping little bits and bobs safe while on the move.

When it comes to the Renault Master Z.E. Luton, however, the cab is sure to impress. The cabin is spacious and comfortable, ensuring a smooth and comfortable experience for drivers and passengers alike.

Additionally, the Master Z.E. Luton boasts a number of useful features, including automatic headlights and wipers, a reasonably sized multimedia touchscreen with Media Nav Evolution and smartphone integration, as well as a permanent rear view camera and functional rear parking sensors for optimised safety.

The Verdict

We’re sure you’ve guessed it, but there is no clear winner between these vans. Each vehicle offers a range of impressive features and has practical applications across a range of industries.

Those seeking a little extra range may be tempted by the Peugeot e-Boxer’s 154-mile capabilities. However, those looking for a well-designed cab, comfortable seats and infotainment may swing towards the Renault Master Z.E. Luton.

It’s safe to say that, whichever van takes your fancy, you’re in safe hands.

"Staff here are so courteous & helpful, genuine in how they talk rather than that dreaded ‘business speak’. Reception and offices are modern & relaxing to be in, very cool music in background too! Some place just give you the basics - but I found Vanaways completely charming throughout, really appreciated thank you."
