In recent years, electric vehicle technology has progressed so much that they are now genuine competitors with standard diesel and petrol cars. Their range has improved drastically and with the introduction of rapid charging, it now takes only a matter of minutes to charge one up. The challenge, however, has been designing and producing a van with an electric motor. Vans are naturally much bigger than standard cars and must be capable of carrying large loads and several people. As we move into 2023, we are finally at a point where electric vans must just be genuine competitors with their diesel cousins.

Many of the famous van manufacturers now produce an electric variant of their diesel models and some are becoming incredibly popular. Naturally, these electric models aren’t right for everyone, but there is genuine merit in some of these vans.

One of these brands that have started to produce electric models is Renault. The car brand has a few vans in its fleet and the Master Z.E is the latest addition. So, how do the regular Master and the Master Z.E. compare? Keep reading to find out!

Engines and Spec

The diesel variant of the Master has used the same 2.3-litre dCi turbo diesel engines since 2010. At first glance, this might seem like a slight drawback step, but these engines are actually incredibly reliable and have a brilliant reputation. Admittedly, the slightly dated technology is a little loud, but the fuel economy and reliability really are second to none. In terms of power, you can buy the diesel Master with up to 180hp, which is more than enough power for a van of its size. Alongside the 180hp model, you can also choose from a 130, 135, 140, 150, and 165hp variant, so you’ll certainly be able to find a power option that suits your needs!

If it’s the speed you’re after, then you may fall on the side of the diesel model. The electric Master has a 57kW electric motor which produces 77hp, which gives the van a top speed of just under 70 mph. However, if you select the eco option while you’re driving, the van will restrict the motor’s performance to gain the highest possible range. This will limit the Master Z.E’s top speed to just 50 mph. Though if you’re selecting this model, the chances are you’re probably working within a town or city and won’t need the van’s top speed, anyway. So, it’s certainly a nice feature to have.

Interior

In terms of the interior, both of these vans are almost identical. They both have plenty of secure storage in the cab, so you can keep your valuables safe when they’re left unattended. There are three secure lockers found underneath the seats which will safely hide your items. What’s more, there are a myriad of compartments and smaller storage areas for some of your less valuable items.

The driving position is also extremely well-designed in both of these vans. Naturally, as a large payload vehicle, it’s difficult to design the cab to feel like a car when you’re driving, but the Master does come close. There are far fewer blind spots than many of its competitors and the driving position is extremely comfortable.

When it comes to technology, you’ll also be thrilled with the options you’ll have. Both vehicles come with a large multimedia LED screen on the dashboard that can play your music through Bluetooth.

The Verdict/Snap shot

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the electric model wins hands down with running costs. Well, let’s be honest it’s pretty much a given seeing as charging up using a public fast charger is completely free. Add to that the free road tax, low emission zones and congestion charge and you’ve got almost no overheads at all for running your van. Of course, you will still need to take your vehicle to the garage every once in a while for a service, but the new Renault vans are extremely reliable.

Arguably, the next most important feature of a new van is its payload. While both these vans have fairly commendable figures, there is one clear winner here. The diesel van can handle up to 1,530kg of payload, which is some of the best figures available in the van market today. Whereas the electric variant can manage 1,490kg. Admittedly, this is incredibly good for an electric van but it just loses out to its diesel cousin.
