Vauxhall Movano VAn vs Vauxhall Movano-e Electric Van

The UK’s longest-serving vehicle manufacturer Vauxhall first brought out the popular Vauxhall Movano in 2010 and sent waves in the large van market. Renowned for its strong value and very high payloads, this van has received several updates and remains one of the best large vans to choose if you need plenty of payload.

Following the success of this van, Vauxhall made the decision to introduce an electric alternative known as the Movano-e in 2021, offering lower running costs and zero emissions. The Movano-e has also seen several updates following its release in 2021, including a bigger battery promising a 154-mile range – a 15-mile increase on the old 70kWh battery.

The Movano-e is only available in a panel-van form and in two body lengths: L3 and L4. That’s enough for a maximum cargo volume of up to 17 cubic metres – the same as the latest diesel Movano.

While like most electric vehicles, the Movano-e is more expensive to buy outright than the diesel-powered Vauxhall Movano, both variations can be purchased on finance at Vanaways for a more affordable and cost-effective approach.

If you are struggling to decide which option to go for, keep reading for an in-depth comparison of the engines, specs and interior of the Vauxhall Movano and Movano-e.

Engines and Spec

The most obvious difference between the Vauxhall Movano and the Movan-e is, of course, the engine.

The Vauxhall Movano has been recently updated with a range of 2.3-litre diesel engines, all of which feature BiTurbo twin-turbo technology for better fuel efficiency and performance.

With a host of new parts to enhance efficiency, power output for these runs from 135hp to 180hp on FWD models, and 130hp to 165hp on RWD models.

This is an increase of 5-10hp across the board versus the immediately preceding Movano engine line-up, with corresponding increases in torque of between 20Nm and 40Nm as well.

The Movano-e, on the other hand, boasts a new 75kWh battery promising a 154-mile range which is a 15-mile increase on the old 70kWh battery. Power and torque remain at 118bhp and 260Nm respectively, generated by a single electric motor.

As mentioned in our Vauxhall Movano-e van review, charging will not be a problem with the Movano-e as it can go from 0-80% in as little as an hour using a 50kWh public fast charger, while with the common 7kWh wall box you’ll likely have installed at home will charge your vehicle in six to twelve hours, making it ideal to charge overnight ready for your day ahead.

Despite a limited payload compared to the diesel alternative which offers an impressive 3.5 tonnes, there is no compromise on loading capacity compared to the diesel version of the Movano, thanks to the lithium battery pack being located under the floor away from the load area.

Interior

The cabin area of both the Vauxhall Movano and the Movano-e are comfortable and spacious.

Climb inside and you’ll be greeted by decent-quality trim and a reasonably modern dashboard layout. However, the biggest inconvenience inside the Movano-e is the electric vehicle data monitoring display, which displays the Movano-e’s charge level, driving mode and range within the rear-view mirror instead of the instrument cluster. This itself is redundant while being in a panel van, however, this is still within accessible eyesight when driving.

In terms of storage, there are up to ten in-cab storage areas available, including the glovebox, a dash-mounted document clip and various open or lidded compartments on the dashboard.

In addition, there are large door pockets, storage space beneath the passenger seat and a sizeable 22-litre overhead storage compartment.

The Verdict/Snap shot

While the Vauxhall Movano and the Movano-e are packed full of benefits making them both strong contenders in the large van market, the van you choose will ultimately boil down to your individual needs and preferences.

If you are looking for an affordable, strong van with a large payload, then the diesel-powered Vauxhall Movano is a sure choice for you.

However, if you are looking for a more environmentally-friendly option with lower running costs and zero emissions, then the all-electric Movano-e could be the van for you.

Both the Vauxhall Movano and the Movano-e are available on finance at Vanaways for an affordable and cost-effective solution.

"Paige was outstanding in her responsiveness to what presented as a serious problem for our company. The finance company used by her company caused unnecessary and significant delays in the delivery of our van - the pain of which was mitigated somewhat by Paige's proactive communication, informative and realistic communication and very professional demeanour. I'd recommend her and she meant our view of Vanaways was overall positive."
