Tipper: Peugeot e-Boxer vs Vauxhall Movano-e

Tipper vans have long been favoured by tradespeople working in light construction or landscaping thanks to the convenience they offer when it comes to transporting and unloading building materials, construction or garden waste and heavy equipment. The popularity of the tipper van, combined with our increasing awareness of the climate crisis, has led many mainstream van manufacturers to convert their most popular tipper models into electric variants. Two great examples of this are the Peugeot e-Boxer Tipper and Vauxhall Movano-e Tipper.

Although the e-Boxer Tipper and Movano-e Tipper are both strong contenders for your next commercial vehicle purchase, we understand that customers might not be sure of which option is best for them and the needs of their business. Not to worry, however, as in this guide we’ve compiled the peaks and pitfalls of both vehicles to help you determine which one is most suitable for you.

Engines and Spec

As the tipper van is designed with the express purpose of simplifying the unloading process, payload capacity will play a key role in the decision of which vehicle to choose for many drivers. Unfortunately, there is a glaring difference between the two vans in this regard: although the Movano-e racks up an impressive maximum payload of 2,100kg, the e-Boxer fails to keep up with its 1,117kg of payload in its largest variant. Although this does mean that the e-Boxer is still capable of lugging a mid-weight load around – which will be more than plenty for some drivers – tradespeople working with very heavy equipment or removal companies will likely find the Movano-e a better fit.

Underneath the bonnet of the Movano-e, drivers can choose to have a 37kWh or 70kWh battery, with driving ranges of 72 miles and 132 miles respectively. Both of these batteries will provide you with more than enough power for shifting heavy loads around town and on moderately long drives. Of course, if you want to make the most of that huge payload capacity on a longer journey, the 70kWh battery is the better choice.

By comparison, the e-Boxer is fitted with a 75kWh battery that can manage a driving range of up to 154 miles – beating both of the Movano-e’s battery options by a mile. If you can cope with the smaller payload, then this makes the e-Boxer a great van for motorway journeys. Charging to full battery can take up to 12 hours, but this is more than acceptable if you’re planning on charging overnight.

Interior

The cab is where both vans really excel, and within each you are greeted by a modern and spacious interior with plenty of handy technical features. To begin with, the Movano-e oozes practicality – from its wealth of storage options to the MyVauxhall app access. The VauxhallConnect interface is also a welcome addition, providing all of the necessary information drivers of an electric van require, such as remaining battery and driving range.

The e-Boxer’s interior similarly boasts plenty of storage space, ideal for stashing everything you need for a day out on the job. One unique feature is the fact that all of the information typically found on the instrument cluster has been moved to a display on the rearview mirror – indicating the remaining range, battery percentage and current driving mode. Although it might take a little getting used to, it’s convenient to be able to glance over from time to time. The touchscreen display comes as standard, featuring an integrated navigation system, and the gearbox has been replaced by three buttons for easy switching between Drive, Neutral and Reverse.

The Verdict

Despite the fact that the Vauxhall Movano-e Tipper and the Peugeot e-Boxer Tipper are both great electric vehicles in their own right, there are naturally advantages and disadvantages of both, and deciding between the two will ultimately come down to your specific requirements. For example, if you need a van that can carry extremely heavy loads, the Movano-e is probably the superior choice; on the other hand, the e-Boxer is a better choice for drivers who need to go the extra distance.

"Paige was outstanding in her responsiveness to what presented as a serious problem for our company. The finance company used by her company caused unnecessary and significant delays in the delivery of our van - the pain of which was mitigated somewhat by Paige's proactive communication, informative and realistic communication and very professional demeanour. I'd recommend her and she meant our view of Vanaways was overall positive."
