Volkswagen Crafter Luton Low Loader Review

The Volkswagen Crafter Luton Low Loader at a glance

The Volkswagen Crafter is renowned for being the largest of VW’s van range, and the Luton Low Loader version allows you to take advantage of its load space to the fullest extent. A Low Loader version of a Luton simply means that the floor of the van is nearer to the ground.

With the Crafter’s lightweight design, it is able to offer an increased payload volume whilst not requiring a tail lift. This means that the load space is easy to access and perfectly suitable for transporting larger, more awkward loads. Volkswagen also employs Ingimex’s manufacturing for its rear load space, with a bespoke four-tier load restraint system for deck lashing, standard load lock lashing, or for use with optional Ingimex telescopic load poles.

Not only this, but the Crafter Low Loader boasts a high-strength Ingimex shutter with a smooth finish (no external cables) and a reinforced bottom plank to protect against the movement of unsecured loads. And, typically of Volkswagen, there are a number of impressive safety driver assistance features, demonstrating innovative technological creativity to make the driving experience feel both effortless and advanced.

Engines and Spec

The Volkswagen Crafter Luton Low Loader features a 2.0-litre TDi diesel engine that can produce 130hp.  This version is most effective with front-wheel drive, allowing the body to be mounted as low as possible, helping the vehicle’s centre of gravity. The Volkswagen is also constructed with lightweight materials such as GRP and aluminium in order to maximise its payload, whilst also featuring horizontal lashing rails to allow for flexibility in loading items of all shapes and sizes.

As a Luton with a large frontal area, the Volkswagen’s fuel efficiency leaves a lot to be desired. Although it features a surprisingly aerodynamic Luton head, the Crafter only reaches between 24 to 28mpg. This being said, excellent fuel economy isn’t necessarily essential for a vehicle which should specialise in transporting heavy, awkward payloads.

This is a field in which the Crafter Luton Low Loader excels, able to transport 893kg with a manual transmission and 861kg with an automatic transmission. Accompanied by the various lashing rails, this makes loading the vehicle hassle-free, and the Crafter Luton Low Loader can even tow up to 3000kg without a payload.

Interior

The Crafter Luton Low Loader’s interior is modern and comfortable, although it is only available in the entry-level trim. However, there is lots of space in the cabin with a lower dash tray for longer items, large door bins, and a glovebox which Volkswagen claims to be the largest in its class. Furthermore, with an upgraded chassis package, enhanced suspension, reinforced stabilizers, and a heavy-duty front axle, the Crafter Low Loader boasts a comfortable ride.

The Volkswagen, as expected from such a distinguished brand, comes with a range of technologically-advanced features which improve safety on the road. Front Assist with City Emergency Braking comes as standard, an impressive component which uses a radar sensor to detect when the vehicle in front is too near. The radar will warn you and prepare the vehicle for braking, and if you don’t respond, it will partially apply the brakes to minimize or avoid the collision.

Driving assistance features such as this, the Electromechanical Servotronic steering, and the Electronic Stabilisation Programme, all make the Volkswagen an innovative, technologically advanced vehicle which is both comfortable and safe to drive, whatever the distance, road type, or payload.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Low ride height and lashing means a variety of items can be loaded with ease
  • Advanced Technological Features
  • Lightweight, allowing for heavy payloads

Cons

  • Fuel efficiency could be improved
  • Interior is only available in entry-level trim

The Verdict

On the whole, the Volkswagen Crafter Luton Low Loader is an excellent van for larger commercial uses, featuring a good payload volume with plentiful and easy-to-access load space. The lower ride height allows not only ease in transporting items but an increased speed and efficiency when compared to versions installed with a tail lift.

Volkswagen provides excellent driver assistance and safety features, which alongside the van’s spacious interior, make the driving experience comfortable and hassle-free. Whilst it might be nice to get a more refined dashboard in a larger model such as a Luton Low Loader, there are nonetheless a series of optional extras available to the consumer that can enhance the interior’s layout. The Volkswagen’s fuel efficiency can also be seen as a slight issue, but it could be said that this aspect isn’t the prerogative for a vehicle which can carry heavy, multiple-sized items with such ease, effectiveness, and safety.

If you’re in need of a large commercial vehicle in order to carry heavy or awkwardly shaped objects, the Volkswagen Crafter Luton Low Loader is an excellent choice. "First class service, I must mention Adrian & Ash on an excellent deal & swift turn around under the short notice I had to buying a new van. Slight delay in the delivery of the van from manufacturers end but Adrian agreed to cover the cost of a hire van until my new van was delivered which allowed me to continue working. its the first time i've purchased a van without physically entering a dealership and i wouldn't hesitate to do it again."
