Mercedes-Benz eSprinter Electric Van Review

The Mercedes-Benz eSprinter at a glance

As far as large vans are concerned, the Sprinter range from Mercedes-Benz has been a close contender for the top spot year after year. Competing with the likes of Ford and VW, there’s a reason this van is so popular.

Now, the long-awaited eSprinter has hit the roads; this all-electric version of the internationally renowned diesel Sprinter is undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with, seamlessly integrating modern, sustainable technology into a large, workable body.

In a snapshot, the eSprinter offers reliability, quality and comfort. It is a sure contender for tradespeople on the hunt for a van capable of making the back-and-forth of day-to-day work a breeze, this model could be ideal.

Of course, nothing is perfect and despite its impressive load space, sturdy build and low-running costs, the eSprinter is accompanied by certain limitations. That said, as far as reliability, build quality and comfort are concerned, this vehicle is up there with the best.

In the following article, we’ll take a closer look at the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter, including its engine specifications, load capabilities and cab interior.

Engines and Spec

Let’s begin under the bonnet. Regarding the engine, of course, there isn’t one. This 100% electric van is powered by a modestly sized 55kWh battery, capable of delivering a range of up to 96 miles. If we’re being totally honest, this was a little underwhelming and, for those looking for a van suitable for long days on the road, it might not be ideal. However, for town driving and short back-and-forths, the eSprinter is a suitable choice.

For tradespeople working within close proximity to their home or HQ, this van has a lot of potential, allowing daytime use and overnight charging. A full charge from a mains outlet will take about 8 hours, whereas a fast charge option can top the battery up to 80% in under 30 minutes.

As with all modern electric vehicles, running costs are significantly lower than their petrol and diesel counterparts; drivers of the eSprinter can expect significant savings over the lifespan of their van.

Payload & Space

For those in need of a van with plenty of space, the eSprinter really stands out. At present, the L2H2 model provides a sizable 11.0m3 load area. With over 3 metres of usable length and a 2-metre ceiling, this is more than enough for long items and sizable cargo.

However, Mercedes have fallen short of the mark when it comes to the eSprinter’s payload capacity. Offering a maximum weight of just 774 kg, the van doesn’t stand up to other electric competition such as the Peugeot e-Expert or Citroen’s e-Dispatch; if you’re after a more sizable payload, one of these might be a better option.

Interior

Inside the cab, both driver and passengers are greeted by Mercedes’ usual quality. The interior is well-built and spacious, with adjustable seats, great accessibility and a neatly designed dashboard that doesn’t intrude on legroom.

As the eSprinter is only available in one trim model, drivers aren’t given much choice regarding interior equipment and tech. There’s no shortage of storage and the heated driver’s seat is definitely a win in our books.

For those looking for a futuristic tech-laden cab, the eSprinter may disappoint slightly; aside from the DAB radio and Bluetooth connectivity, there’s not much in the way of entertainment. However, if a well-designed, high-quality cab is what you’re after, the eSprinter is an excellent choice. It does exactly what it needs to, and it does it well.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Comfortable Driving Experience

  • Well-Built, Quality Interior

  • Impressive Load Volume

Cons

  • Low Payload

  • Limited Range

The Verdict

Overall, there’s no denying that the eSprinter is a solid van. Mercedes-Benz are known for their quality and sturdiness and, on that front, this model doesn’t disappoint. As discussed above, what the eSprinter lacks in payload capacity and range, it makes up for in comfort and space. While it may not be the ideal choice for long journeys and transporting heavy cargo, it’s more than capable of shorter trips and would make a perfect choice for deliveries of lighter items.

"First class service, I must mention Adrian & Ash on an excellent deal & swift turn around under the short notice I had to buying a new van. Slight delay in the delivery of the van from manufacturers end but Adrian agreed to cover the cost of a hire van until my new van was delivered which allowed me to continue working. its the first time i've purchased a van without physically entering a dealership and i wouldn't hesitate to do it again."
